Khattar

Khattar (खट्टर) , Kathar (कटहर), Kahtar (कह्टर) is a Muslim Jat clan found in Pakistan.

Khattar originating in India (Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh) and Pakistan (Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa). It is classified as Rajput and Jat in Pakistan and as Jat and Khatri in India.

Religion

Most Khattars follow Islam, Hinduism and Sikhism. Khattars have traditionally been regarded as a high, aristocratic caste and have held high positions such as generals, ministers and rulers.

Khattars in Pakistan

Khattars in Pakistan live mostly in the Attock, Chakwal, Kahuta, Islamabad/Rawalpindi regions. Notable Pakistani Khattars include:

• Sir Sikandar Hayat Khan, prime minister of the Punjab and a former Governor;
• Shaukat Hayat Khan, the politician son of Sikandar Hayat Khan;
• Begum Mahmooda Salim Khan was Pakistan's first female minister and the eldest daughter of Sikandar Hayat Khan.
• Begum Bilquis Sheikh Khan was a writer and Christian Missionary and granddaughter of Sikandar Hayat Khan.

Khattars in India

There is a sizeable population of Khattars in India, too, chiefly in the Indian Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. Some of them migrated from Pakistani Punjab on Partition and Independence in 1947. Most are Hindus and Sikhs. Many are active in business and the professions.
