Khunga

Khunga (खुंगा) Khuga (खुगा) Khugga (खुग्गा) Khuga (खूगा) Khonga (खोंगा) is gotra of Jats found in Bhiwani district in Haryana. Khunga (खूंगा) is one of the principal Jat clans, by position and influence in Hoshiarpur, in which District it is found in and near Budhipind. They were supporters of Chauhan Confederacy.

History

There was a Rajasthani Jat with 'Chauhan' surname. He migrated to southern Haryana region few hundred years ago. He had two sons - Bhaina and Jugaa. These brothers originated two gotras:

• Off springs of Bhaina came to be known as 'Bhayan'.
• off springs of Jugga came to be known as 'Jaglan'.

One of the Jaglan later settled near a pond (Johad) known as 'Khundla Johad' near Juglan village in Bhiwani district. His descendants came to be known as Khunga (corrupted form of Khundla).

Distribution in Haryana

In 'Bidhwan' village in Siwani tehsil, Bhiwani district, Haryana, they are known as Jaglan whereas in adjacent village Kalali, they are known as Khunga.

Khunga Gotra is also found in the Kole Khan/Kalekhan and Dhundwa villages in Kalayat tehsil in Kaithal district of Haryana.

Given their same roots, Hindu Jats of Jaglan, Bhayan, Khunga and Chauhan do not inter-marry.

Sub divisions of Chauhan

Bhim Singh Dahiya provides us list of Jat clans who were supporters of the Chauhan when they gained political ascendancy. The Khonga clan supported the ascendant clan Chauhan and become part of a political confederacy.
