Variants

  • Krumu (क्रुमु) = Kuruma (कुरुम) (AS, p.246)

Origin of name

Alexander Cunningham[1] writes that The name of Kophes (Kabul) is as old as the time of the Vedas, in which the Kubha river is mentioned as an affluent of the Indus. The Kunar River, the Kurram River, and the Gomal rivers to the west, and the Kunihar River to the east of the Indus, all of which are derived from the Scythian ku, " water."

Course

The Kurram River crosses the Afghan-Pakistan border about 80 km southwest of Jalalabad and in ancient times, offered the most direct route from Kabul and Gardez to modern-day northwestern Pakistan. The route crossed the Peiwar Kotal Pass 3,439 m (11,283 ft) high, just over 20 km west of Parachinar, which is blocked by snow for several months of the year. The Kurram River joins the Indus River near Isa Khel after a course of more than 320 km (200 miles).

In Rigveda

The Kurram River finds mention in the Rig Veda under the name of Krumu.
