Mahan (माहान)[1] Mahan (महान)[2] Mahan (महन) is a gotra of Jats found in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Origin

History

Mahansar (महनसर): बड़वा के अनुसार यह गाँव महन जाटों के द्वारा बसाया हुआ था. ठिकानेदार से विवाद के कारण गाँव छोडकर जाना पड़ा और नवलगढ़ के पास देवगांव में जाकर बस गए.

In Mahabharata

Adi Parva, Mahabharata/Mahabharata Book I Chapter 94 mentions histories of those kings who were descended from Puru. Shloka 11 tells that Matinara had four sons of immeasurable prowess, viz., Tansu, Mahan, Atiratha, and Druhyu of immeasurable glory. (Amongst them, Tansu of great prowess became the perpetrator of Puru's line).

मतिनारस ततॊ राजा विद्वांश चर्चेपुतॊ ऽभवत
मतिनार सुता राजंश चत्वारॊ ऽमितविक्रमाः
तंसुर महान अतिरथॊ दरुह्युश चाप्रतिमद्युतिः (I.94.11)

Aswamedha Parva, Mahabharata/Book 14 Chapter 8 mentions names of Shiva. One of them is Mahan.

बिल्वदण्डाय सिथ्धाय सर्वदण्डधराय च
मृगव्याधाय महते धन्विने ऽद भवाय च (14.8.17)
