Ramatirtha (रामतीर्थ) was the name of a Tīrtha (pilgrim’s destination) mentioned in the Mahābhārata with reference to Balarama's journey to tirthas on Sarasvati River.

Variants

History

1) Rāmatīrtha (रामतीर्थ).—A holy place in the river Gomatī. He who bathes in this tīrtha will derive the results of performing the Aśvamedha yajña. (Vana Parva, Chapter 34, Verse 73).[1][2]

2) Rāmatīrtha (रामतीर्थ).—A holy spot on the top of the Mahendra mountain where Paraśurāma lived. A bath here brings the benefits of performing the aśvamedha yajña. (Vana Parva, Chapter 85, Verse 17).[3][4]

3) Rāmatīrtha (रामतीर्थ).—A holy place in the plains of river Sarasvatī. (Śalya Parva, Chapter 49, Verse 7).[5][6]

Rāmatīrtha (रामतीर्थ).—A R.; the mahānadī touching the hill of Prabhāsa where Rāma bathed with his wife; all sins committed in a hundred generations vanish as a result of a bath in this tīrtha;1 the mantra for bathing in;2 sacred to Ramanā and the Pitṛs3 in Ayodhyā.4

Ramtirtha Orissa

Ramatirtha is located nearby Jashipur town of Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. Ramatirtha is located beneath the feet of Similipal National Park. It is the only Crocodile Rearing Center of Mayurbhanj district which attracts lots of tourist to visit.Ramatirtha of Mayurbhanj is very famous in Odisha due to its natural beauties and temple of Sri Rama. As per the Indian mythological history, during the days of Tretaya Yuga, Lord Sri Rama along with Devi Sita and Brother Laxman passed thorugh the forest of Similipal; where due to tiredness Sita sat on the platue for a while and she wash her face and feet in the river that flows beneath. Then onwards, Ramatirtha of Mayurbhanj became a legendary place in the name of Sri Rama and Devi Sita. Every year on Makar Sankranti (Mid of January), Mahanta peoples celebrate Tusumelana festival or Tusu Parab.[7]

In Mahabharata

Rama tirtha (राम तीर्थ) is mentioned in Mahabharata (III.82.66), (III.83.14), (III.83.40), (IX.48.6),


Vana Parva, Mahabharata/Book III Chapter 82 mentions names Pilgrims. Rama tirtha (राम तीर्थ) is mentioned in Mahabharata (III.82.66). [8].... Proceeding next, O son of the Kuru race, to the Rama-tirtha (राम तीर्थ) (III.82.66) on the Gomati, and bathing there, one obtaineth the merit of the horse-sacrifice, and sanctifieth also his own race.


Vana Parva, Mahabharata/Book III Chapter 83 mentions names of Pilgrims. Rama tirtha (राम तीर्थ) is mentioned in Mahabharata (III.83.14).[9].... Proceeding next to the mountain called Mahendra Parvata (महेन्द्र) (III.83.14), inhabited (of yore) by Jamadagnya, and bathing in Rama tirtha (राम तीर्थ) (III.83.14), a person acquireth the merit of the horse-sacrifice.

Rama tirtha (राम तीर्थ) is again mentioned in Mahabharata (III.83.14). [10]....Then should one proceed to Shurparaka (शूर्पारक) (III.83.40), where Jamadagni's son had formerly dwelt. Bathing in that tirtha of Rama tirtha (राम तीर्थ) (3.83.40), one acquireth the merit of giving away gold in abundance.


Shalya Parva, Mahabharata/Book IX Chapter 48 describes Balarama's journey to tirthan on Sarasvati River:Indra Tirtha, Rama Tirtha, Aditya Tirtha. Rama tirtha (राम तीर्थ) is mentioned in Mahabharata (IX.48.6). [11]....He (Balarama) then proceeded to that auspicious and foremost of tirthas called after the name of Rama (Parashurama) (Rama Tirtha). The highly blessed Rama of Bhrigu's race, endued with great ascetic merit, repeatedly subjugated the Earth and slew all the foremost of Kshatriyas.

रामतीर्थ

रामतीर्थ (AS, p.790) महाभारत कालीन एक प्राचीन तीर्थ स्थान था- 'शुभ्रंतीर्थवरं तस्माद् रामतीर्थ जगामह।' महाभारत, शल्यपर्व 49, 7. महाभारत काल में यह सरस्वती नदी के तट पर स्थित एक प्रसिद्ध तीर्थ था, जिसकी यात्रा श्रीकृष्ण के भाई बलराम ने सरस्वती के अन्य तीर्थों की यात्रा के साथ की थी। महाभारत की कथा के अनुसार यह तीर्थ परशुराम के नाम पर प्रसिद्ध था।
