Satya Pal Malik

Satya Pal Malik (सत्यपाल मलिक) (b: July 24, 1946) is former Governor of Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Goa and Meghalaya states. It was during his tenure that the decision to abrogate Article 370, which gave special status to J&K, was taken in August 2019.

Short description of political career

Early state politics

Satya Pal Malik was first elected to any public office was as a member of legislative assembly from Baghpat after he successfully contested the election as member of Ch. Charan Singh's Bharatiya Kranti Dal. He won the election by receiving 42.4% of the votes cast and defeating his nearest rival Acharya Deepankar of the Communist party of India who got 31.6% of the total votes cast. Later, after the formation of Bharatiya Lok Dal, he joined the party and become the general secretary of Lok Dal.

National politics

1980–89 : Rajya Sabha Member from Uttar Pradesh
1989–91 : Member of Lok Sabha from Aligarh, on Janata Dal ticket
1996 : Lost Lok Sabha Election from Aligarh on SP ticket, came fourth with only 40,789 votes.
2012 : Appointed National Vice President of BJP

Governor of States

30 September 2017 – 21 August 2018 : Governor of Bihar. On 21 March 2018 he was also given the additional charge to serve as Governor of Odisha up to 28 May 2018.
23 August 2018 – 30 October 2019 : Governor of Jammu and Kashmir
3 November 2019 – 18 August 2020 : Governor of Goa
18 August 2020 – 3 October 2022 : Governor of Meghalaya

Background

Satya Pal Malik was born into a Jat family in Hisawada village which now falls into Khekada tahsil of Bagpat district, Uttar Pradesh. He pursued his law degree from Meerut College before joining politics.

He has served as the Union Minister of State, Parliamentary Affairs, and Tourism and has held many important positions in Central and state governments. In his political career, he has also been the Chairman and member of many Parliamentary Committees.

जीवन वृत्त

श्री सत्यपाल मलिक का जन्म एक साधारण किसान परिवार में 24 जुलाई 1946 को गाँव हिसावड़ा जिला बागपत (पुराना मेरठ) में हुआ था। इनके पिता का नाम श्री बुध सिंह जी व माता जी का नाम श्रीमती जगबीर कौर (जुगनी देवी) था। लगभग डेढ़ वर्ष की आयु में इनके पिता जी का देहान्त हो गया था। अपने बाल्यकाल से ही ये पढ़ाई में बहुत अच्छे थे। स्कूल की पढाई समाप्त करने के पश्चात् उच्च शिक्षा के लिए मेरठ कालिज में प्रवेश लिया जहां से इन्होंने बी.एस.सी. (1967) तथा एल.एल.बी. (1970) पास की। इनका विवाह श्रीमती इकबाल मलिक (प्रसिद्ध पर्यावरणविद्) से हुआ। इनके पुत्र देव कबीर (प्रसिद्ध ग्राफिक डिजाइनर) नेशनल इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ डिजाइन से डिप्लोमा प्राप्त हैं। इनकी पुत्रवधू श्रीमती निविदा चन्द्रा इण्डियन इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ टेक्नोलाजी की स्नातक रही हैं।

श्री सत्यपाल मलिक की अभिरुचि ऐतिहासिक तथा पुरातात्त्विक विषयों का अध्ययन है तथा संगीत, फोटोग्राफी, कविता-रचना में विशेष अभिरुचि है।

इनके पूर्वज लगभग 250 वर्ष पूर्व यानि दस पीढ़ी पहले गांव कल्हावड़ (खरावड़) (जिला रोहतक) से जाकर उत्तरप्रदेश में बस गए थे। गांव कल्हावड़ में आज भी उनका पैतृक निवास है और कुछ वंशज यहां पर रह रहे हैं।
