Sirvi

Sirvi (सिरवी) is a Jat subcaste, who live in the Marwar and Gaudwar region of Rajasthan. They are found in greater numbers in Jodhpur and Pali districts of Rajasthan.

Mention by Pliny

Pliny mentions Ethiopia.... Beyond is the region of Sirbitum, at which the mountains terminate,²⁷ and which by some writers is said to contain the maritime Æthiopians, the Nisacæthæ, and the Nisyti, a word which signifies "men with three or four eyes,"— not that the people really have that conformation, but because they are remarkable for the unerring aim of their arrows.

History

Servi is a Kshatriya farming caste. Which was separated from Jats and Rajputs about 800 years ago and was living in Marwar and Gaudwar region of Rajasthan. After a time, these people failed in Mewar, Malwa, Nimar and other areas of the country.

शिवि गण

डॉ. धर्मचंद्र विद्यालंकार ने लिखा है....शिवि गण ने राजस्थान में जाकर सिरोही (शिवि रोही) और मेवाड़ तक में अपना शिवि जनपद बसाया था; जिसके मुद्रांक हमें उत्खनन में मिलते हैं. इसी नाम की एक जाति वहां पर वर्तमान में भी शिरवी कहलाती है. संभवत: मद्र-देश (स्यालकोट) से प्रवाजित होने के ही कारण उन्हीं का एक नाम मद्र से बिगड़ कर मेड और मेव तक भी हो गया है. शायद मेवाड़ नाम शिवि जनपद का होने के कारण हुआ होगा. अजमेर का भी पुरातन नाम मेरवाड़ा ही है. [p.16]: कठ कबिले ने ही ईसा की आरंभिक शताब्दियों में जाकर सौराष्ट्र या शकराष्ट्र को अपना काठियावाड़ नाम दिया था. शकों के राज्य की सूचना हमें केवल सुदर्शन झील के जीर्णोद्धार के अवसर पर अंकित चौथी शताब्दी के शकराज रुद्रदामन के अभिलेख से ही मिलती है. शकराष्ट्र से ही बिगड़ कर सौराष्ट्र नाम पड़ा था तो कठों के अधिकार के पश्चात ही काठियावाड़ नाम हुआ होगा.

Distribution

At present, people of Servi community are living in large numbers in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Daman Diu, Pondicherry and other areas of the country besides Rajasthan.
