Foreword

It is a matter of immense pleasure and satisfaction for me to place before the readers - The Jats: Their Role and Contribution to the Socio-economic Life and Polity of North & North-West India, Vol. II, which enshrines 46 research articles presented in the National Seminars organized under the aegis of Centre for Research and Publication of Suraj Mal Memorial Education Society, New Delhi.

To achieve the objective of the Society, we felt the need for digging out the past history of the Jats based on historical data. The society moved in this direction by reprinting the classical books of K.R. Qanungo (History of the Jats) , Desh Raj (Jat Itihas) and Raja Mahendra Pratap (My Life Story and Reminiscences of a Revolutionary) so, as to make these books available to the reading public. Then the publication of the following historically important well-researched works was undertaken - Girish Chandra Dwivedi (The Jats: Their Role in the Mughal Empire), Upendra Nath Sharma (Maharaja Jawahar Singb aur Unke Uttaradhikarii and Ganga Sagar the verses of Jat Sant Ganga Das.

The Society also fulfilled the desire of Hindi readers by publishing the Hindi translation of prominent works of EX. Wendel (Hindustan mein Jat Satta), G.C. Dwivedi (Jat Aur Mughal Samarajya) and K.R. Qanungo (Jaton ka Itihasy. The introduction with critical analysis of the themes of some of these works have been widely acclaimed by distinguished academicians.

But there were many gaps in these studies that come in the way of truly appraising the contribution of the Jats to the emergence of national ethos. Therefore during all these years our Centre for Research and Publication continued search for newer material on the history and contribution of the Jats. The critical insight to the prevalent material on the Jats led us to devise ways for associating larger number of scholars to carry out deep insight in the history of the Jats and to fill the gaps in it. Keeping this object in view, we started a chain of National Seminars on the role and contribution of the Jats in various spheres of

Social, Economic and Political life of the nation. Encouraged by over- whelming response of the scholars of history from amateur to well-trained and established ones convinced us about the utility of holding National Seminars as the number of participants and papers presented have been ever increasing.

In view of ever increasing research activities quantitatively as well as qualitatively Indian Council of Historical Research, New Delhi has accorded the status of recognized institution for research projects of history to the Centre for Research and Publication of the Society. Now scholars can name our society as institution of affiliation for their research projects submitted to ICHR.

I am beholden to a large number of historians for their contribution in the efforts of retracing the lost history of the Jats. In fact, what we claim to have achieved is the real outcome of the contribution made by the participants in these National Seminars. I sincerely invite the researchers to continue to encourage us to work in right direction and also make their constructive contribution by presenting papers not only on the history of the Jats but also on their multi-dimensional activities in the past, present and also suggest direction for future for the betterment of the community as well as ruralites as such.

For the onerous work of organizing National Seminars at such a large scale, I take the opportunity to appreciate the efforts of all the office bearers of the Society & Centre for Research and Publication as well as all the members of faculty of Maharaja Surajmal Institutes involved in various ways in the task.

I wish to acknowledge the serious efforts put in by our honorary Director Dr. Vir Singh in compiling, editing and bringing out this prestigious volume with his scholarly introduction.
