Sonpur

Sonpur (सोनपुर) is an ancient city in Saran District of the Indian state of Bihar.
Location
It is situated on the banks of the River Gandak (River Narayani) and Ganges River in the Saran District. The town is located at 25.7°N 85.1832°E at an altitude of 42 metres (137 ft).

History
The river Gandak must have been the route of the movement of Buddha and his followers from Nepal Tarai to Magadh that is why many of the stupas and similar structures, including Ashoka pillars, are found on the banks of the river. The location of Pathar ki Masjid just opposite the meeting point of the gandak, that is southern bank of the Ganges, shows the Muslim influence of trade and commerce in medieval times. The current township Patna is just the modern version of the makeshift headquarters of military establishments of old Patna city which in turn was later version of Pataliputra, the capital of Maurya Empire.
Of the ten railway stations in the world having the longest railway platforms, Sonepur being on the 8th (and 2nd longest at the time of construction) longest platform in the world at 2,415 ft (736 m). It is connected by two rivers, the Ganges and the Gandak.

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[1] ने लेख किया है ...उक्कचेल (AS, p.85) स्थान पाली साहित्य में उल्लिखित है। उक्कचेल बेरंजा-वाराणसी मार्ग पर स्थित था। उक्कचेल का अभिज्ञान बिहार राज्य के सोनपुर से किया गया है।

1. सोनपुर (बिहार) (AS, p.987): बिहार राज्य में पूर्वोत्तर रेलवे का स्टेशन है। स्टेशन से थोड़ी दूरी पर गण्डकी नदी गंगा में मिलती है। यहीं सोनपुर कस्बा है। यह स्थान गंगा-सोण के संगम पर बसा हुआ है. संगम के एक ओर पाटलिपुत्र (पटना) तथा दूसरी ओर सोनपुर अवस्थित है. यह हिन्दुओं का प्राचीन तीर्थस्थल है। यहाँ प्रसिद्ध ऐतिहासिक हरिहरनाथ जी का मन्दिर है। यह हरिहर क्षेत्र माना जाता है। यहाँ तेल नदी के तट पर सुवर्ण मेरू महादेव का मंदिर है। इसके कारण ही संभवत सोनपुर नाम पड़ा है. कहते हैं एक धनी व्यापारी ने सुवर्णमेरू का मंदिर बनवाया था. हरिहर क्षेत्र पौराणिक कथा में वर्णित गजग्राह-युद्ध की स्थली माना गया है. किन्तु श्रीमद्भागवत 8.2.1 में इस कथा की घटना स्थली त्रिकूट नामक पर्वत पर मानी गई है, 'आसीद् गिरिवरो राजस्त्रिकूट इति विश्रुत:, क्षीरोदेनावृत: श्रीमान् योजनायुत्तमुच्छ्रित'. बिहार में त्रिकूट नामक पर्वत वैद्यनाथ के निकट है किन्तु सोनपुर से काफी दूर है.
2. सोनपुर (उड़ीसा) (AS, p.987): - महानदी पर बसा हुआ नगर है. इसके निकट ही प्राचीन ययाति नगरी स्थित थी.
गंडकी-गंगा संगम ही वस्तुतः यहाँ का पुण्य तीर्थ है। वहाँ स्नान की महिमा है। श्रीमद्भागवत में इसे शालग्राम क्षेत्र कहा है। जड़भरत ने पूर्वजन्म में यहीं तप किया था। महर्षि विश्वामित्र के साथ जनकपुर जाते हुए श्रीराम-लक्ष्मण यहाँ पधारे थे। यह स्थान ऋषियों, तपस्वियों का सदा प्रिय रहा है। कार्तिक पूर्णिमा पर दो सप्ताह तक एशिया का सबसे बड़ा पशु मेला लगता है। उसमें पशु-विक्रय होता है। [3]
