Chamasodbheda (चमसोद्भेद) (Tirtha) in Mahabharata (III.80.119), (III.130.5)
Vana Parva, Mahabharata/Book III Chapter 80 mentions the merit attached to tirthas. Chamasodbheda (चमसोद्भेद) (Tirtha) is mentioned in Mahabharata (III.80.119).[1]....One should next proceed with subdued senses and regulated diet to *Vinasana (विनशन) (3.80.118), where Saraswati (सरस्वती) (3.80.118) disappearing on the breast of Meru, re-appeareth at Chamasa (चमस) (3.80.118), Shivodbheda (शिवॊद्भेद) (3.80.119) and Nagadbheda (नागॊद्भेद) (3.80.120). Bathing in Chamasodbheda (चमसॊद्भेद) (3.80.119), one obtaineth the merit of the Agnishtoma sacrifice.
Vana Parva, Mahabharata/Book III Chapter 130 mentions Chamasodbheda (चमसोद्भेद) (Tirtha) in Mahabharata (III.130.5).[2]....Here is the beautiful and sacred river, Saraswati, full of water: and here, O lord of men, is the spot known as Vinasana, or the place where the Saraswati disappeared. Here is the gate of the kingdom of the Nishadas and it is from hatred for them that the Saraswati entered into the earth in order that the Nishadas might not see her. Here too is the sacred region of Chamasodbheda where the Saraswati once more became visible to them.
Shalya Parva, Mahabharata/Book IX Chapter 36 describes Baladeva's journey along the bank of the Sarasvati river. Balarama, who started his pilgrimage from Dvaraka with his paraphernalia (consisting of priests, foremost of Brahmains, friends, servants, cars, elephants, steeds and many vehicles drawn by kine and mules and camels), first proceeded to the holy tirtha named Prabhasa (in present-day Gujarat, India). From there, he travelled upstream to reach Chamsodbheda, where he and his pilgrimage party passed the night. Then the party moved further to reach Udapana where River Sarasvati was invisibly flowing underground. After bathing in the sacred waters of Sarasvati at Udapana, Balarama travelled to Vinasana where Sarasvati had become invisible. After bathing in the waters of Sarasvati at Vinasana, Balarama reached Subhumika and then proceeded to the tirtha of Gandharvas and then to the sacred tirtha called Gargasrota and then travelled further visiting several holy tirthas on the banks of Sarasvati.[3]
चमसोद्भेद
विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[4] ने लेख किया है ..चमसोद्भेद (AS, p.328) नामक स्थान का उल्लेख महाभारत, वनपर्व 82, 112 में हुआ है। इसके अनुसार चमसोद्भेद सरस्वती नदी के विनशन तीर्थ के पश्चात् है- 'चमसेऽथ शिवोद्भेदे नागोद्भेदे च दृश्यते, स्नात्वा तु चमसोद्भेदे अग्निष्टोमफलं लभेत।' उपर्युक्त प्रसंग के वर्णन से सूचित होता है कि सरस्वती नदी, विनशन में नष्ट या विलुप्त होने के पश्चात् चमसोद्भेद में फिर प्रकट होती थी। इसी स्थान पर अगस्त्य और लोपामुद्रा का विवाह सम्पन्न हुआ था। शल्यपर्व 35, 87 में भी चमसोद्भेद का सरस्वती के तटवर्ती तीर्थों में वर्णन है- 'ततस्तु चमसोद्भेदमच्युतस्वगमद् बली, चमसोद्भेद इत्येवं यं जना: कथयन्त्युत।'
