History
V. S. Agrawala[4] writes that Panini mentions Pura (IV.2.122) ending names of towns like Karnipura (Kārṇipura)
V. K. Mathur[5] writes that Karnika is mentioned in Shiva Purana (1,75). It is probably Karnali situated on the junction of Uri and Narmada.
Village officials in Chauhan Administration included one Karanika (करणिक = लिपिक): The Secretary of village assembly was known as Karnika. He used to keep account of Panchakulas.

In Mahabharata
Karnika (कर्णिक) is mentioned in Mahabharata (II.28.48),(VI.10.58). Bhisma Parva, Mahabharata/Book VI Chapter 10 describes geography and provinces of Bharatavarsha. The other Provinces in south include - Karnika in verse (VI.10.58). [7]
Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 28 mentions Sahadeva's march towards south: kings and tribes defeated. It includes - Karnika in verse (II.28.48). [8]
