Karnali (करनाली) is a village in Sitamau tehsil, Mandsaur district in Madhya Pradesh.

  • Karnali is said to be originated from Mahabharata province Karnika (कर्णिक) (II.28.48),(VI.10.58).

Mention by Panini

Karanika (करणिक), Gananika (गाणनिक) is mentioned by Panini in Ashtadhyayi. [1]

History

V. S. Agrawala[2] writes that Panini mentions Pura (IV.2.122) ending names of towns like Karnipura (Kārṇipura)


V. K. Mathur[3] writes that Karnika is mentioned in Shiva Purana (1,75). It is probably Karnali situated on the junction of Uri and Narmada.


Village officials in Chauhan Administration included one Karanika (करणिक = लिपिक): The Secretary of village assembly was known as Karnika. He used to keep account of Panchakulas.

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[4] ने लेख किया है ...कर्णिका (AS, p.145) कर्णिका बृहत् शिवपुराण में 1,75 में उल्लिखित है। संभवत: यह उरी और नर्मदा के संगम पर स्थित कर्नाली है। (न. ला. डे)

Bhisma Parva, Mahabharata/Book VI Chapter 10 describes geography and provinces of Bharatavarsha. The other Provinces in south include - Karnika.

कर्णिकाः कुन्तिकाश चैव सौब्धिदा नलकालकाः
कौकुट्टकास तदा चॊलाः कॊङ्कणा मालवाणकाः Mahabharata (VI.10.58)

Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 28 mentions Sahadeva's march towards south: kings and tribes defeated. It includes - Karnika.

पाण्ड्यांश च दरविदांश चैव सहितांश चॊथ्र केरलैः
