V. S. Agrawala[1] writes that Ashtadhyayi of Panini mentions janapada Susthala (सुस्थल), under Bhargadi (भर्गादि) (IV.1.178).
In Mahabharata
Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 13 mentions tribes fled out of fear of Jarasandha: Susthalas is mentioned in verse (II.13.25)... And,the eighteen tribes of the Bhojas, from fear of Jarasandha, have all fled towards the west; so also have the Surasenas, the Bhadrakaras, the Bodhas, the Salwas, the Patachcharas, the Susthalas, the Sukuttas, and the Kulindas, along with the Kuntis.
