History

About two miles east from Barhi, in the villages of Rajdhani. Tongri and Upadhauli, are the remains of a great city or fortress said to be the home of the Maurya dynasty. This city appears to have extended from the Rapti to the Pharond, a distance of about four miles from east to west, and to have been about a mile in breadth. From Dihghat on the Rapti to the bank of the Gurra are several brick-strewn mounds, and on the east of the latter river is a very large mound called tho Upadhaulia Dih, about a mile in length and some 1,600 feet in width, with the re- mains of two large brick stupas. Another mound occurs in Rajdhani to the north-east of Upadhaulia, and further on in the same direction, near the Pharend, are the tracers of an extensive brick enclosure, about 1,900 by 1,300 feet. The site has never been explored, and all attempts at identification necessarily rest on pure conjecture. [3]

The republic of the Mauryas of Pippalivana has been identified with Rajdhani and Updhauli villages (in the Gorakhpur tahsil ) about 14 miles (22.5 km.) south-east of Gorakhpur city. The Moriya state extended to the territories of the Koliyas on the west and the north-west, and to those of the Mallas of Kushinagar and Pava in the east, and north-east. The place still abounds in peepal trees. It is dieted with archaeological remains over an area of about four miles (6.4 km.) in length and two miles (3.2 km.) in breadth. A large mound called Updhauli Dih lies on the eastern bank of river Gaura. To the north-west of village Rajdhani are found, ruins of an ancient brick enclosure called Sahankot, presumably the site of a large monastery, and several brick-strewn mounds. Mithabel, five miles (8.0 km.) south-east of Rajdhani, perched on a large mount of bricks in ruins, is believed to be the remains of the ancient Nyagrodha forest. These antique pieces of evidence indicate the rich heritage of these places as sites of prosperous cities of the Moriyas.
