Gora (गोरा)[1] [2] [3] Gaura (गौरा) Gor (गोर) Gaur (गौर) Goriya (गोरिया) Goria (गोरिया)[4] [5] Gaurayan (गौरायण) [6] Gaura (गौरा) is a Clan or Gotra of Jats found in Rajasthan,[7] Madhya Pradesh, Punjab in north India. Gharan and Ghori apparently are the names of the same clan and are found in Afghanistan.[8] Dilip Singh Ahlawat has mentioned it as one of the ruling Jat clans in Central Asia. [9] James Tod places it in the list of Thirty Six Royal Races.[10] Gaur is a Gotra of the Anjana Jats in Gujarat.

Origin

  • Some other historians quoting Manusamhita write that king Yuvanashwa married to a girl Gauri (गौरी) daughter of Matinara (मतिनार) Chandravanshi clan. Samrata Mandhata was born from them. After Gauri's name the title of Mandhata became Gaur.[12]
  • According to the bards of the clan, Gora is a branch of Chauhans. But Goras being of earlier origin they seem to have joined Chauhan Confederacy as they are recorded with Chauhans.

History

Ram Swarup Joon[13] writes... Gaurs are Brahmins as well as Kshatriyas. They trace their origin to Suryavanshi King Mandhatha. Mandhatha's mother's name was Goran, who was a Chandravanshi.

According to the "Vayu Purana" (Ansha 99. shloka 130) Mandhata was therefore called Gaur Naresh. According to Bhagwat Datt, both Gaur Brahmins and Gaur Kshatriyas started from King Mandhatha and the Harit gotra started from his great grandson. During the advent of Islam in Afghanistan the ruler of that place belonged to Ghore dynasty. His name was Subhag Sen. Even now there are a large number of people belonging to this dynasty in Zabalisthan and are called Ghorzai. Shahahuddin Mohammed Ghori belonged to this very dynasty. Ghore is a branch of the Baluches also, but they are not accepted as proper Baluchis. Bhagor in Bikaner was the capital of the Ghor kings, from where they were driven out by the people belonging to Bal Clan. After that they settled down in the mountainous county of Ajmer where they are found in large numbers even today. Bundi and Sirohi were also under their occupation. The Chauhan clan conquered the Ghors. Their inscriptions have also been found in Malwa and Bhind. The Bhandon Ghor kings ruled in Bhandra in district Hissar, and they were included in 35 royal clans. Jurel also belonged to Bhadon Ghor Clans.

Ram Sarup Joon[14] writes that...Kasana or Kasvan is a Jat Gotra in Rajasthan at present. King Kanishka was a foreign Yuchi (Yuti Jat and Khathans were Khotani or Turkish Jats. Turkistan has been a pure Jat country and the ancestors or Turks were of Takshak Ghorsi (Ghosi) (Ghorzay), the Zablastanis of Kabul were Indians.

Gorzai a big tribe of Pathans in Ghazni (Zabilastan) claim their origin from Gazni.

The Gaur Jats and Rajput had their kingdoms in Rajasthan also.

This was because Afghanistan was a province of India and tribes often shifted from one province to another.

They are descendants of Pingala (पिंगल) Nagavansh. [15]Dilip Singh Ahlawat has mention it as one of the ruling Jat clans in Central Asia. [16] Nagil, Gora and Kulharia they all belong to the Nagavansh association. Nagil, Kohad and Kulaharia never marry in their clans.

In ancient times ruled in Ajmer-Merwara, Mewar, and Bundi-Sirohi areas in Rajasthan.

G.H. Ojha, has brought to light the inscription on the temple of Bhramaramata goddess near Chhoti Sadri in Chittorgarh district, Rajasthan which was inscribed on Magha Sudi 10th , Samvat year 547, by Yashavapusha Gaur, Grandson of Rajayavardhana in memory of his parents. [17] [18]

Gaur is the name of a people in Brihat Samhita of Varahamihira. The Mahabharata mentions them under the name of Ghoraka, same as the later Ghori / Gauri [19]. It is the same name born by Mohammad Ghori. [18]

In Bhatt records they have been mentioned as Gor of Ajmer. The period of their inhabitance in this area was prior to the rule of Chauhans. [20]

Bhim Singh Dahiya in his book "Aryan Tribes and the Rig Veda" has mentioned that Gora is a Rigvedic clan. In Rigveda it has been written as Ghaura (1/36-43) that is present Jat clan Gora or Gaur or Gauri. [21]

H.A. Rose [22] writes that Goria (गोरिया) is a small Jat clan found in Nabha. It derives its name from Goran Singh, who settled at Alowal in Patiala.

Nanana Cooper-plate registering the grants of Chauhan King Alhana (v. 1205) mentions about Gora (गौर्या) Rajakula in Line-10.[23]

Gora Jats continued to have important standing in the society as one daughter of this clan was married with Maharaja Suraj Mal of Bharatpur. She was mother of Maharaja Jawahar Singh, the eldest son and successor of Maharaja Suraj Mal. [But some historians have committed error in identifying her as belonging to Rajput clan][24]

James Tod[25] writes that The warriors assembled under Visaladeva against the Islam invader included Rama the Gor; The Gor was a celebrated tribe, and amongst the most illustrious of the Chohan feudatories ; a branch until a few years ago held Soi Kalan-Sheopur in Madhya Pradesh and about nine lacs of territory. I have no doubt the Gor appanage was west of the Indus, and that this tribe on conversion became the Ghor.

Chhoti Sadri Inscription of samvat 547 (491 AD)[26]

Gors have been mentioned in an inscription found in Bhramara Mata (भ्रमरमाता) or locally known as Bhavar Mata (भवर माता) temple on a hillock near village 'Chhoti Sadri' (छोटी सादड़ी) in the princely state of Udaipur. A stanza in adoration of mothergodess- Bhramaramata in the the beginning is found. Another stanza speaks of the Ardhanarisvara conception, the right half of the form being Shiva and the left half Shakti. The epigraph records the construction and consecration of temple of a Devi in January 491.[27] It is in Brahmi script and Sanskrit language. [28]Pandit Gauri Shankar Hirachand Ojha has written about the inscription of 'Chhoti Sadri' in an article published in Nagari pracharini-patrika, part 13, issue-1 under the title Gaur namak agyat kshatriya vansh - गौर नामक अज्ञात क्षत्रिय वंश. [29] Text of the inscription in sanskrit language is given in the box in side or it may be seen at - Chhoti Sadri.

This inscription indicates that Maharaja Dhanyasoma (धान्य सोम) was a popular king of Gor Kshatriya clan. Rajyavardhan (राज्यवर्द्धण), Rashtra (राष्ट्र) and Yashagupta (यश गुप्त) rulers followed in succession. The inscription also reveals that the Gor kings had constructed goddess temple in memory of their ancestors as per Hindu Calendar on date magha shukla 10 in samvat 547 (491 AD). The inscription proves the rule of Gor kings near 'Chhoti Sadadi' place in Rajasthan in 6th century. They were considered to be powerful till the rule of Maharana Raimal. [30]

Gaur was a feudetory of Vardhana King of west Malwa as is known from the fragmentary Mandsaur inscription of the time of Adityavardhana. Earlier than him was Maharajadhiraja Dravyavardhana, the king of Avanti - West Malwa. Dravyavardhana and Adityavardhana could be contemporary of Budha Gupta and Narasimha Gupta respectively. [31]

From the Mandsaur and Chhoti Sadri[32] inscriptions of Gaur, we know about his predecessors. Puṇyasoma was the first king in the family of Māṇavāyaṇis. His son and successor was Rajyavardhana. Rashtra was the son of Rajyavardhana. Rashtra's son and Successor was Yashagupta. King Gaura was the son of Maharaja Yashagupta. The prince Gobhaṭa is also mentioned in Chhoti Sadri Inscription. It is very probable that he was son of the Māṇavāyaṇi king Gaur. In Chhoti Sadri Inscription Maharaja Gaur does not mention his sovereign. [33]

James Tod on Gaurs

James Tod is a pioneer historian on Jats who thoroughly scrutinized the bardic records of Rajasthan and Gujarat and also brought to light over a dozen inscriptions on the Jats. We reproduce the Chapter 7 Catalogue of the Thirty Six Royal Races from Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan, Volume I, Publisher: Humphrey Milford Oxford University Press 1920, p. 138-139:

Gaur

The Gaur tribe was once respected in Rajasthan, though it never there attained to any considerable eminence. The ancient kings of Bengal were of this race, and gave their name to the capital, Lakhnauti.

We have every reason to believe that they were possessors of the land afterwards occupied by the Chauhans, as they are styled in all the old chronicles the ' Gaur of Ajmer.' Repeated mention is made of them in the wars of Prithwiraja, as leaders of considerable renown, one of whom formed a small State in the centre of India, which survived through seven centuries of Mogul domination, till it at length fell a prey indirectly to the successes of the British over the Mahrattas, when Sindhia in 1809 annihilated the power of the Gaur and took possession of his capital, Sheopur. In 1807 the author passed through this territory, in a solitary ramble to explore these parts, then little known ; and though but a young Sub., was courteously received and entertained both at Baroda and [Sheopur]]. In 1809 he again entered the country under very different circumstances, in the suite of the British envoy with Sindhia's court, and had the grief to witness the operations against Sheopur, and its fall, unable to aid his friends. The Gaur prince had laid aside the martial virtues. He became a zealot in the worship of Vishnu, left off animal food, was continually dancing before the image of the god, and was far more conversant in the mystical poetry of Krishna and his beloved Radha than in the martial song of the bard. His name was Radhikadas, ' the slave of Radha ' ; and, as far as he is personally concerned, we might cease to lament that he was the last of his race.

[p.139]: A petty district, yielding about £5000 annually, is all this rapacious head of a predatory government has left to the Gaur, out of about twelve lacs of annual revenue. The Gaur has five sakha : Untahar, Silhala, Tur, Dusena, and Budana.

Only two sub-clans are named in Rajputana Census Report, 1911, i. 255. Gaur Rajputs are numerous in the United Provinces, and the Gaur Brahmans of Jaipur represent a foreign tribe merged into Hindu society (IA, xi. 22). They can have no connexion with the Pala or Sena dynasty of Bengal (Smith, EHI, 397 ff.).

They are said to be descended from the Saroha family of the Lunar Rajputs and are closely connected with the Dhillon, Melti and Saroha Jats. The ancestor to whom they trace their origin, Rana, came from Sirsa to Jammu and thence to this district in the time of the Emperor Akbar.

Gora Badal has been mentioned in history as warrior who protected Padmini. Pandit Gaori Shankar Hirachand Ojha has clarified in the article published in Nagari pracharini-patrika, part 13, issue-1 under the title Gaur namak agyat kshatriya vansh - गौर नामक अज्ञात क्षत्रिय वंश, that Gora and Badal mentioned in literature as two separate persons are in fact one person. Badal is his name and Gora was his clan. He was so brave that he could kill many muslims simultaneously. One burj has been mentioned in his name as Gaur-burj. The story of Gora Badal has been depicted on a wall painting in Eklingaji temple in Udaipur. Two dome shaped houses have been constructed in the name of Gora-Badal Mahal, south of Padmini Mahal, in Chittorgarh fort. [38]
