Bhadra

Bhadra (भादरा) is a town and tahsil in district Hanumangarh in Rajasthan. They fought Mahabharata War in Pandava's side

Origin of the name

It was founded by Bhadu Gotra Jats. Bhadus had ruled in this area of Rajasthan. It is in west of Hisar. As per Imperial Gazeteer of India v-8, p-22, its population in 1901 was 2,651. Bhadra is also a Jat clan. Dilip Singh Ahlawat has mentioned it as one of the ruling Jat clans in Central Asia. ^[1]

History

According to Imperial Gazeteer of India v-8,p-22, the Bhadra tehsil was formerly the estate of one of the principal Thakurs ; but he was in constant rebellion against the Darbaris and was finally dispossessed in 1818. More than 44 per cent of the population were Jats at that time.

महाभारतकालीन जनपदों में भद्रक लोगों का भी वर्णन आता है। ये जाटवंश अवश्य ही जांगल देश के भादरा नगर के क्षेत्र में रहे होंगे और निश्चित ही भादरा इनकी राजधानी रही होगी। भादरा से जोधपुर और अजमेर की ओर इनका बढ़ना पाया जाता है। ये लोग शान्तिप्रिय पाये जाते हैं और अब भादू और कहीं-कहीं भादा कहलाते हैं^[2]

Karna's conquests: Vana Parva, Mahabharata/Book III Chapter 255 describes Karna's victory march and countries subjugated. Bhadra (भद्र) is mentioned in Mahabharata (3-255-20).^[3] .... And, having conquered the entire earth--east, west, north and south--that hero without any aid brought under subjection all the nations of the Mlechchhas (म्लेच्छ) (3-255-19b), Atavika (आटविक) (3-255-19b), the mountaineers (Parvatanivasina) (पर्वतनिवासिन) (3-255-19b), the Bhadras (भद्रा) (3-255-20a), the Rohitakas (रोहितक) (3-255-20a), the Agneyas (आग्रेय) (3-255-20a) and the Malavas (मालव) (3-255-20a).

Punia rule

According to James Tod as mentioned in his book "Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan (1829)" the Jangladesh region was inhabited by Jats or Jits, who had for ages been established in these arid abodes. At every stage of invasion to India the invaders had to encounter with the Jats of this region. At what period the Jats established themselves in the Indian desert is not known. By the 4th century they had spread upto Punjab in India.

Nearly the whole of the territory forming the boundaries of Bikaner was possessed by the six Jat cantons namely:—

1. Poonia, 2, Godara, 3. Saran 4. Asiagh 5. Beniwal 6. Johiya, or Joweya

Each canton bore the name of the community, and was subdivided into districts. Number of villages in each canton and Districts included in them were as under :

Poonia : Villages - 300 Districts : Bhadra, Ajitpura, Sidhmukh, Rajgarh, Dadrewa, Sankhoo, etc. ^[4]
