Uttarajyotisha (उत्तरज्योतिष) is a Kingdom mentioned in Mahabharata and won by Nakula.

History

The Uttarajyotika seems to have been the same as Landikotala, Vrindataka as Burindu and Attuck and Dvarpala as the Khybar.

उत्तर ज्योतिष

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर ने लेख किया है ... उत्तर ज्योतिष (AS, p.92) 'कृत्स्नं पंचनदं चैव तथैवामरपर्वतम् उत्तरज्योतिषं चैव तथा दिव्यकटं पुरम्।' नकुल ने अपनी पश्चिम-दिशा की दिग्विजय यात्रा में इस स्थान को जीता था। प्रसंगानुसार इस की स्थिति पंजाब और कश्मीर की सीमा के निकट जान पड़ती है। जिस प्रकार प्राग्ज्योतिष (कामरूप-असम की राजधानी) की स्थिति पूर्व में थी, इसी प्रकार उत्तर ज्योतिष की स्थिति उत्तर पश्चिम में थी। इसका पाठांतर जोतिक भी है जो उत्तर-पश्चिम हिमालय में स्थित जोता नामक स्थान हैं।

जोतिक

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर ने लेख किया है ...जोतिक (AS, p.372) नामक स्थान का उल्लेख महाभारत, सभापर्व 32,11 में हुआ है। इस उल्लेख के अनुसार पाण्डव नकुल की दिग्विजय यात्रा के प्रसंग में 'उत्तरज्योतिष' (या पाठान्तर-ज्योतिक) को नकुल द्वारा जीते जाने का वर्णन है। श्री वासुदेव शरण अग्रवाल के मतानुसार यह उत्तर-पश्चिम हिमालय में स्थित 'जोता' नामक स्थान हो सकता है। (दे.उत्तरज्यॊतिक)

Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 29 mentions the Countries subjugated by Nakula in West. Uttarajyotika (उत्तरज्यॊतिक) is mentioned in Mahabharata (II.29.10). ....And the illustrious hero (Nakula) soon brought under subjection the mighty Gramaniya that dwelt on the shore of the sea, and the Sudras and the Abhiras that dwelt on the banks of the Saraswati, and all those tribes that lived upon fisheries, and those also that dwelt on the mountains, and the whole of the country called after the five rivers, and the mountains called Amara, and the country called Uttarayotisha and the city of Divyakutta and the tribe called Dwarapala.
