David G. Mahal is an author and researcher University of Bolton Bolton, United Kingdom. Originally he is from India but has lived most of his life in the United States. He developed an interest in genetics and genealogy which led him to do further research into the genetic history of the Indian subcontinent, which resulted in his important books,

1. Before India: Exploring Your Ancestry with DNA (2014)

2. Ancestral Roots of the Jats: DNA Revelations (2015)

Brief Introduction

After having his DNA analyzed through the National Geographic Society's Genographic Project, he developed an interest in genetics and genealogy that led him to do further research into the genetic history of the Indian subcontinent. As a result of this effort, his first book "Before India: Exploring Your Ancestry Through DNA," was published in 2014. In addition to being an author, David is the founder and president of a management services and communications firm where, among other things, he published a business journal on technology for fifteen years. Before starting his firm he held management positions at several multinational companies including Air India, Xerox Corporation, and a Howard Hughes company. David earned the advanced executive MBA degree from the Peter Drucker School of Management at Claremont Graduate University, the MS degree from University of Rochester, and the BA degree from Dominican College. He is an instructor at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), and serves as a volunteer at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles

Before India: Exploring Your Ancestry with DNA (2014)

Author: David G. Mahal

Publisher: DGM Associates

Before India is an easy-to-read guide to ancestry that focuses specifically on the Indian subcontinent. It illuminates how human origins and ancestry are best discovered through a combination of science and history. The book is not a dry study of genetics. It includes many appropriate pictures, maps, and charts to reinforce the text.

Mirroring a multifaceted subject matter, the book Before India is a fascinating, well-researched amalgamation of genres—part genealogical guide, part ethnic history, part science exposé—that draws a more holistic picture of ancestry by combining these varied insights. And while this easy-to-read text is a perfect launching point for people whose ancestry ties them to the Indian subcontinent, any reader will benefit from suggestions on how to trace your lineage to an ancestral group going back thousands of years.

Exploring topics such as the cosmos, the origin of our planet and human evolution, migrations and invasions to the Indian subcontinent that brought many different foreign genes, as well as how DNA science is used to trace ancestry, the book provides both a robust explanation of genealogy and penetrating insight into India’s colorful tapestry of hundreds of unique ethnic groups.

The book includes a research study of the ancestral origins of several key ethnic communities in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, along with some communities of Indian and Pakistani origin in a few other countries.

Review of the book: by Dr. Tim Barrett, Department for Continuing Education, Oxford University

Bringing together cosmology, genealogy, evolution, history and the story of the human genome, David Mahal's exploration of humankind's sense of belonging provides an accessible guide to the latest thinking on human genetic heritage ... the pleasure lies in the author's adept synthesis of diverse disciplines and in the provocative questions raised, not least the eternal importance of "where we come from" and of where that question now stands in the face of the DNA revolution. As Mahal demonstrates, current science promises a wholesale, sometimes startling reassessment of our roots and ancestry. Though the book's ultimate topic is the ethnicity of the Indian subcontinent there is much to enjoy, and learn, for all those interested in discovering their deeper family origins.

The Jats represent an ethnic community that has inhabited the northwest region of the Indian subcontinent (both in India and Pakistan) for several thousand years. This book is about the ancient origins of these people long before history books were written.

The Jat community is estimated to equal the combined population of France, Spain, and Portugal. Many members of this community are now scattered all over the world, including Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, United States, and New Zealand. This book is a shorter version of Before India, and focuses specifically on this ethnic community.

Study on Origin and Diversity of the Jat Population

David G. Mahal and Ianis G. Matsoukas conducted studies on Y-STR Haplogroup Diversity in the Jat Population which Reveals Several Different Ancient Origins. A brief about this study is as under:

The Jats represent a large ethnic community that has inhabited the northwest region of India and Pakistan for several thousand years. It is estimated the community has a population of over 123 million people. Many historians and academics have asserted that the Jats are descendants of Aryans, Scythians, or other ancient people that arrived and lived in northern India at one time. Essentially, the specific origin of these people has remained a matter of contention for a long time.

This study demonstrated that the Origins of Jats can be clarified by identifying their Y-chromosome haplogroups and tracing their genetic markers on the Y-DNA haplogroup tree. A sample of 302 Y-chromosome haplotypes of Jats in India and Pakistan was analyzed. The results showed that the sample population had several different lines of ancestry and emerged from at least nine different geographical regions of the world. It also became evident that the Jats did not have a unique set of genes, but shared an underlying genetic unity with several other ethnic communities in the Indian subcontinent. A startling new assessment of the genetic ancient origins of these people was revealed with DNA science.
