Dongargarh (डोंगरगढ़) is a town and tahsil in Rajnandgaon District of the state of Chhattisgarh, India. It is the site of the Bambleshwari Temple. Author (Laxman Burdak) visited it on 20.05.1986.
Location
A prominent pilgrim destination in Rajnandgaon District, the city lies about 35 kms west from Rajnandgaon, 67 kms west from Durg. The Maa Bamleshwari Devi Temple, situated on a 1,600 feet high hilltop, is a popular landmark. The nearest airport is at Raipur, 110 kms away while the nearest railhead is Dongargarh Railway Station.
Origin
Featuring majestic mountains and ponds, Dongargarh is derived from the words: 'Dongar' meaning 'mountains' and 'garh' meaning 'fort'.

History
Monuments
- The Ma Bamleshwari Devi Temple is situated on a 1,600 feet high hilltop. It is of great spiritual importance and several legends are associated with this shrine too.
- Another prominent shrine in the vicinity is Chhoti Bamleshwari Temple. Devotees flock these temples during Navratri.
- Shivji Temple and temples dedicated to Lord Hanuman are also located here.
- The ropeway is an added attraction and is the only passenger ropeway in Chhattisgarh. A severe accident occurred in 2016 when the ropeway broke and fell down killing several people. The town is known for religious Harmony and has considerable population of Buddhists, Sikhs, Christians and Jains apart from Hindus.
- A Jain temple is also constructed on a hill known as Chandragiri with the blessings of Jain saint Acharya Shri Vidyasagar Ji Maharaj[1]. The temple is specially recognized for an ancient statue of the Teerthankara god Chandraprabhuji.
- One of the biggest gurudwaras in the state is also located in the heart of the city managed by the Sikh society which also run Khalsa Public School, one of the biggest schools in the town.
Legend
The legend goes that around 2200 years ago, Raja Veersen, a local king, was childless and upon the suggestions of his royal priests performed puja to the gods.[2] Within a year, the queen gave birth to a son whom they named Madansen. Raja Veersen considered this a blessing of Lord Shiva and Parvati and constructed a temple here.In the temple of Dongargarh, king Vikramaditya went for suicide but Devi Bamleshwari came and stopped him to do this act. For reaching the top, there are total 1000 steps that lead to the temple.
डोंगरगढ़
विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[3] ने लेख किया है ...डोंगरगढ़ (AS, p.382) छत्तीसगढ़ के राजनांदगाँव के ज़िलान्तर्गत दक्षिण-पूर्वी मध्य रेलवे के हावड़ा-मुम्बई रेल मार्ग पर और रायपुर-नागपुर राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग में महाराष्ट्र प्रांत से लगा सीमांत तहसील मुख्यालय है। ब्रिटिश शासन काल में यह एक ज़मींदारी थी। प्राचीन काल से विमलाई देवी यहाँ की अधिष्ठात्री हैं, जो आज बमलेश्वरी देवी के नाम से विख्यात है। किंवदंती है कि यहाँ पहाड़ी पर किसी समय एक दुर्ग था, जिसमें माधवानल कामकंदला नामक प्रसिद्ध उपाख्यान की नायिका 'कामकंदला' का निवास स्थान था। इसी दुर्ग में कामकंदला की भेंट माधवानल से हुई थी। यह प्रेम कहानी छत्तीसगढ़ में सर्वत्र प्रचलित है। डोंगरगढ़ की पहाड़ी पर प्राचीन मूर्तियों के अवशेष मिलते हैं। इसकी मूर्तिकला पर गौंड़ संस्कृति का पर्याप्त प्रभाव दिखाई देता है। यहाँ से प्राप्त मूर्तियाँ अधिकांशत: 15वीं-16वीं शती ई. में निर्मित की गई थीं। स्टेशन के समीप की पहाड़ी पर 'विमलाई देवी' का सिद्धपीठ है। पहाड़ी के पीछे 'तपसी काल' नामक एक दुर्ग है, जिसके अंदर भगवान विष्णु का एक मंदिर अवस्थित है। कुछ लोगों के मत में विमलाई देवी, मैना जाति के आदि निवासियों की कुलदेवी हैं। धमतरी, रायपुर ज़िला में भी इस देवी का थान है। छत्तीसगढ़ में विमलाईगढ़ नामक एक दुर्ग भी है, जो इसी देवी के नाम पर प्रसिद्ध है। वास्तव में, छत्तीसगढ़ के कुछ इलाकों के आदिवासियों की इस देवी का स्थानीय संस्कृति में प्रमुख स्थान है।
