Origin
These people get this name after Nagavanshi king of name Kuthara (कुठार).[6]

- Deu + Kothar = Deorkothar = Deur Kothar is a site of archaeological importance in Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh. It is known for its Buddhist stupas and was discovered in 1982.
- कोटरिचारा (जाट गोत्र - कोटार) : कोटरिचारा नाम का गाँव झारखंड के सराइकेला खरसावाँ जिले की राजनगर विकास-खंड में है।
In Mahabharata
Adi Parva, Mahabharata/Mahabharata Book I Chapter 57 mentions the names of all those Nagas that fell into the fire of this snake-sacrifice. Nagas of race of Dhritarashtra included Kuthara. [7]
