1. कौशिकी: बंगाल की कौश्या, जो मिदनापुर तालुके में बहती हुई समुद्र में गिरती है. 'ततः पुण्ड्राधिपंवीरं वासुदेवं महाबलम्, कौशिकीकच्छनिलयं राजानं च महौजसम' (II.27.20) महाभारत विराट 30,22. इसी नदी के किनारे ताम्रलिप्ति नगरी बसी हुई थी. कालिदास ने रघुवंश 4,38 में शायद कौशिकी को ही 'कपिशा' कहा है. इसी कौशिकी का श्रीमद् भागवत 5,19,18 में भी उल्लेख है-- 'ऋषिकुल्या त्रिमासा कौशिकी मंदाकिनी यमुना....'

2. कौशिकी: कुरुक्षेत्र की एक नदी. वामन पुराण 39, 6-8 के अनुसार कुरुक्षेत्र में अनेक नदियां प्रवाहित होती हैं-- 'सरस्वती नदी पुण्या तथा वैतरणी नदी, आपगा, च महापुण्या गंगा मंदाकिनी नदी, मधुश्रवा अम्लु नदी, कौशिकी पापनाशिनी दृषद्वती महापुण्या तथा हिरण्यवती नदी.' कौशिकी और दृषद्वती के संगम का महाभारत 83,95-96 में उल्लेख है-- 'कौशिक्या: संगमे यस्तु दृषद्वत्याश्च भारत, स्नाति वै नियताहारा: सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते.'

3. कौशिकी: गोदावरी की सात शाखा-नदियों में से एक. ये हैं गौतमी, वशिष्ठा, कौशिकी, आत्रेयी, वृद्धगौतमी, तुल्या और भारद्वाजी. सप्तगोदावरी का महाभारत वन पर्व 85,43 में उल्लेख है-- 'सप्तगोदावरी स्नात्वा नियतो नियताशन:'

4. कौशिकी: महाभारत भीष्म पर्व 9,18 में उल्लिखित नदी कौशिकी, जिसका अभिज्ञान संदिग्ध है-- 'कौशिकीं त्रिदिवां कृत्यां निचितां लॊहतारिणीम् (VI.10.17).

5. कौशिकी: गंगा की सहायक नदी कोसी जो नेपाल के पहाड़ों से निकल कर नेपाल और बिहार में बहती हुई राजमहल (बिहार) के निकट गंगा में मिल जाती है.

6. कौशिकी: रामगंगा (उत्तर प्रदेश) की सहायक नदी. यह अल्मोड़ा के उत्तर के पहाड़ों से निकलती है और रामपुर के पास बहती हुई रामगंगा में मिल जाती है.

Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 27 mentions the countries subjugated by Bhimasena. Kaushiki (कौशिकी) (Tirtha/River) is mentioned in Mahabharata (II.27.20). [3]


Vana Parva, Mahabharata/Book III Chapter 82 mentions names Pilgrims. Kaushiki (कौशिकी) (Tirtha/River) is in Mahabharata (III.82.135).[4] Bathing next at the confluence of the Kirtika with the Kausiki (III.82.135) and the Aruna, and fasting there for three nights a man of learning is cleansed of all his sins.


Vana Parva, Mahabharata/Book III Chapter 114 mentions Kaushiki (कौशिकी) (Tirtha/River) in Mahabharata (III.114.1). [5]...Then the son of Pandu started from the river Kaushiki (कौशिकी) (III.114.1) and repaired in succession to all the sacred shrines. And he came to the sea where the river Ganga (गङ्गा) (III.114.2) falls into it....


Bhisma Parva, Mahabharata/Book VI Chapter 10 describes geography and provinces of Bharatavarsha. Kaushiki (कौशिकी) (River) is mentioned in Mahabharata (VI.10.17) [6]...of Gomati, and Dhutapapa and Vandana and Mahanadi, of Kaushiki, and Tridiva, and Krtiya, and Vichitra, and Lohatarini. Kaushiki (कौशिकी) (River) is again mentioned in Mahabharata (VI.10.28) [7]....of Sighra, and Pischala, and the river Bharadwaji, of the river Kaushiki, and Shona, and Chandrama;...


Anusasana Parva/Book XIII Chapter 26 mentions the sacred waters on the earth. Kaushiki (कौशिकी) Tirtha is mentioned in Mahabharata (XIII.26.30). [8]....Repairing to the tirtha known by the name of Kausiki and residing there with a pure heart and abstaining from all food and drink for three days, one acquires the power of dwelling (in one's next life) in the happy region of the Gandharvas.

In Ramayana

Kishkindha Kanda Sarga 40 of Ramayana The Empire of Holy Vanaras where Sugreeva orders vanara-s to search Sita in east under the leadership of Vinata, a mighty vanara. Sugreeva commissioning Vinata explains the topography and geography of Eastern side of the Jambudwipa, 'the Indian subcontinent,' and its eastward, comprising whole of South-East Asia. This is the first chronicle ever recorded about the lands and oceans, islands and dwellers in there, as far as Ancient Indian Geography is concerned.
