Variants

Course

The origin of the river is at Talakaveri, Kodagu in Western Ghatsw of Karnataka. It flows generally south and east, across the southern Deccan plateau through the southeastern lowlands, and finally emptying into the Bay of Bengal through two principal mouths in Poompuhar, Tamil Nadu.

The Kaveri basin is estimated to be 81,155 square kilometres with many tributaries including the Shimsha, the Hemavati, the Arkavati, Honnuhole, Lakshmana Tirtha, Kabini, Bhavani River, the Lokapavani, the Noyyal and the Amaravati River. The river's basin covers four states and Union Territories, as follows: Tamil Nadu, 43,856 sq. km.; Karnataka, 34,273 sq. km.; Kerala 2,866 sq. km. and Puducherry, 160 sq. km. Rising in southwestern Karnataka, it flows southeast some 800 kilometres to enter the Bay of Bengal.

Kaveri is the source for an extensive irrigation system and for hydroelectric power. The river has supported irrigated agriculture for centuries and served as the life of the ancient kingdoms and modern cities of South India.

Religious significance

The legend of Kaveri has its origins in Puranas. Kaveri is directly linked with three puranic icons i.e. Agasthya, King Kavera and Lopamudra, the earthly, feminine manifestation of Kaveri herself. It is held that Lopamudra was granted the form of a river, by Brahma, in answer to tapas performed by all the three, including herself. Statues of Goddess Kaveri have been installed at many places and dams on the river.

Kavery River water dispute

The sharing of waters of the Kaveri river has been the source of a serious conflict between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The genesis of this conflict rests in two agreements in 1892 and 1924 between the erstwhile Madras Presidency and Princely State of Mysore. The 802 kilometres long Kaveri river has 44,000 sq. km. basin area in Tamil Nadu and 32,000 sq. km. basin area in Karnataka.

Recently, in Sept. 2016, the Supreme Court of India gave a verdict, directing Karnataka state to release some quantity of water for Tamil Nadu, for dire necessities of standing crops of paddy (rice). Resultantly, the Bengaluru (capital of Karnataka) saw a few days of wide agitations and loss of public property. --Dndeswal (talk) 03:31, 15 September 2016 (EDT)
