Marichi (मरीची) refers to a Mountain mentioned in Rigveda probably located in Garhwal Division. [1]

Variants

History

Marichi was the mindborn son of Brahma and one of the Saptarishi. He is also the father of Kashyapa and the grandfather of the Devas and Asuras.

Maricha is mentioned in Mahabharata (मारीच) (I.70.9),

Marichi (मरीचि) is mentioned in Mahabharata (I.59.10-11), (I.60.4), (I.60.33), (IX.44.8-9), (XIII.116.11),


Adi Parva, Mahabharata/Book I Chapter 70 Genealogy of Daksha, Manu, Bharata, Ruru, Puru, Ajamidha, Yadava, Kuru. Maricha is mentioned in Mahabharata (मारीच) (I.70.9).[3]..... And he bestowed ten of his daughters on Dharma, and thirteen on Kasyapa. And he gave twenty-seven to Chandra, who are all engaged in indicating time. And Kasyapa, the son of Marichi, begat on the eldest of his thirteen wives, the Adityas, the celestials endued with great energy and having Indra as their head and also Vivaswat (the Sun).


Adi Parva, Mahabharata/Book I Chapter 59 gives genealogy of Danavas, Gandharvas, Apsaras, Yakshas, Rakshasas. Marichi in Mahabharata (मरीचि) (I.59.10-11). [4]....Brahma hath six spiritual sons, viz., Marichi, Atri, Angiras, Pulastya, Pulaha and Kratu. And Marichi's son is Kasyapa, and from Kasyapa have sprung these creatures. Unto Daksha (one of the Prajapatis) were born thirteen daughters of great good fortune.


Adi Parva, Mahabharata/Book I Chapter 60 gives genealogy of all the principal creatures. Marichi (मरीचि) is mentioned in Mahabharata (I.60.4).[5]....Marichi, Angiras, Atri, Pulastya, Pulaha, and Kratu--these six great Rishis of great energy--are the sons of Brahman.

Marichi (मरीचि) is mentioned in Mahabharata (I.60.33).[6]...."And the son of Marichi is Kasyapa. And Kasyapa's offspring are the gods (Suras) and the Asuras. And, therefore, is Kasyapa, the Father of the worlds.

Shalya Parva, Mahabharata/Book IX Chapter 44 describes the Kings and clans who joined the ceremony for investing Kartikeya with the status of generalissimo. Marichi (मरीचि) is mentioned in Mahabharata (IX.44.8-9). [7]....the Vaikhanasas, the Valakhilyas, those others (among Rishis) that subsist only on air and those that subsist on the rays of the Sun, the descendants of Bhrigu and Angiras, many high-souled Yatis, all the Vidyadharas, all those that were crowned with ascetic success, the Grandsire, Pulastya, Pulaha of great ascetic merits, Angiras, Kasyapa, Atri, Marichi, Bhrigu, Kratu, Hara, Prachetas, Manu, Daksha,...


Anusasana Parva/Book XIII Chapter 116 gives List of Kings who had abstained from flesh in Karttika month. Marichi (मरीचि) is mentioned in Mahabharata (XIII.116.11).[8]....The seven celestial Rishis, the Valakhilyas, and those Rishis who drink the rays of the sun (Marichi), endued with great wisdom, applaud abstention from meat.
