Dr Ranvir Singh

Dr. Ranbir Singh (Latiyan) was an educationist and leader born as the third child of Late Ch. Kanwal Singh and Late Mrs. Manbhari Devi on June 30, 1925, at village Titawi, district Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Education

After completing his schooling at Titawi, Baghra, and Muzaffarnagar, he did his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from Birla College of Science, Pilani in 1949. After teaching at Chhotu Ram Inter College, Muzaffarnagar for one year, he moved to Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, where he completed his Ph.D. in the field of Organic Chemistry, along with a teaching assignment, in 1955.

Career in Education

Immediately after completing his Ph.D, Dr. Singh was appointed as a faculty member in the Chemistry Department at Sagar University, Sagar, Madhya Pradesh (now Dr. Hari Singh Gaur University, Sagar), where he worked till 1963. Being a keen sportsman throughout his student days, Dr. Singh also attended Rajkumari Amrit Kaur coaching camp for wrestling coaches at Kolhapur, Maharashtra, in 1961. In 1957, Dr. Singh was offered a postdoctoral fellowship at the Department of Chemistry, John Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA. There, his research in the field of chemistry of chlorophyll and haemoglobin was greatly appreciated by his seniors and peers. Dr. Singh, as a true son of the soil, had a dream of contributing to India’s growth and development; and therefore, in spite of having an immigrant visa and the University wanting him to continue, he returned to India and continued teaching at Sagar University till 1963.

In 1963, Dr. Singh was approached by some well-wishers to apply for the post of principal at Janta Vedic Post Graduate College, Baraut, UP. While Dr. Singh gracefully accepted the offer to become the youngest principal in the College’s history, this decision also marked the beginning of an era that transformed Dr. Singh into a potent administrator who led from the front. During his tenure, he made significant contributions to the College’s development that earned him the goodwill and a wide following of the locals.

Having proved his administrative prowess, Dr. Singh moved to a more challenging role and became the founder principal of Sri Aurobindo College, Delhi University, New Delhi. Under Dr. Singh’s administration, from 1972-88, Sri Aurobindo College emerged as a recognized educational institution.

Career in Politics

The year 1991 witnessed Dr. Singh’s entry into the Indian politics. As a candidate of the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), he initially contested the Lok Sabha seat from Baghpat, UP. Due to his performance in the general elections, in addition to the goodwill that he had created, Dr. Singh was nominated as Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha to represent Uttar Pradesh from 1994 to 2000. During this period, he also served as the president of the BJP working committee of Western UP in 1996. Dr. Singh enjoyed a long and fulfilling life that was dedicated to his country and public service. His unparalleled passion for education is demonstrated by the funds he raised for establishing Maharaja Surajmal Educational Society, of which he was also a founder member.

Social Service

A strong proponent of sports, he was the epitome of ‘simple living and high thinking’. Dr. Singh lived a principled life and never compromised on his ethics and values. He had the courage to look adversity in the eye and never succumbed to personal gains. His dedication to his students, particularly those who came from the financially weaker section, changed many lives. Instilled with a deep sense of community pride, he worked tirelessly towards uplifting the Jat community. His towering personality and his selfless nature inspired many students, who went on to achieve great heights in their respective fields.

His family

He is survived by his wife, Dr. Rajkumari Singh, son, Dr. Chandra Mohan, daughter-in-law, Mrs. Neerja Mohan, daughter, Dr. Anita Mohan, son-in-law, Mr. Rajendra Singh, and five grandchildren. Dr. Ranbir Singh's wife Dr. Rajkumari did MBBS in 1957, it is to mention that they were three sisters and all of them did MBBS.
