Varada River (वरदा नदी) is a river in central Karnataka, India. It is a tributary of the Tungabhadra River. Another river of the same name the Wardha River is one of the biggest rivers in Vidarbha region in India. Varada (वरद) is one of thousand names of Shiva. Varada (वरद) is also mentioned as a country and people in Mahabharata.

History

Varada River

The Varada river originates near Vardamoola in Sagara of Karnataka. It flows through the Western Ghats and enters the central districts of Karnataka, (Banavasi, Haveri and Bellary). The river joins the Tungabhadra River at Galaganath.[2] The Varada Devi Temple and Suryanarayana Temple are situated at Vardamoola.[3]

Wardha River

The Wardha River (Varada River, is one of the biggest rivers in Vidarbha region in India. The Wardha River joins the Penganga River south of Chamorshi and forms the Pranahita River at Adilabad District, Telangana.

Origin - Wardha originates at an altitude of 777 meters Satpura Range in village Khairwani near Multai, Betul District of Madhya Pradesh.

Course - From the origin it flows 32 km in Madhya Pradesh and then enters into Maharashtra. After traversing 528 km, it joins the Wainganga forming the Pranahita, which ultimately flows into the Godavari River.

Tributaries - Kar, Wena, Jam, Erai are the left tributaries. Madu, Bembla, Penganga are the right tributaries.

Vana Parva, Mahabharata/Book III Chapter 83 mentions names of Pilgrims. Varada River (वरद) (R)/(T) is mentioned in Mahabharata (III.83.31). [4]....Going next to the Godavari (गॊदावरी) (III.83.30), ever frequented by the Siddhas, one earneth the merit of the cow-sacrifice, and goeth to the excellent region of Vasuki (वासुकी) (III.83.30). Bathing next at the confluence of the Venna (वेण्णा) (III.83.31), one obtains the merit of the Vajapeya sacrifice. By a dip next at the confluence of Varada River (वरदा) (III.83.31), one acquireth the merit of giving away a thousand kine.


Shalya Parva, Mahabharata/Book IX Chapter 44 describes the Kings and clans who joined the ceremony for investing Kartikeya with the status of generalissimo. Varada (वरद) is mentioned in Mahabharata (IX.44.59). [5].....Nanda, Upanandaka, Dhumra, Sweta, Kalinga, Siddhartha, Varada,


Aswamedha Parva, Mahabharata/Book 14 Chapter 8 Mentions Names of Shiva. Varada (वरद) is mentioned in Mahabharata (XIV.8.13) [6] and (XIV.8.25).[7]

In Ramayana

Kishkindha Kanda Sarga 41 mentions that Sugreeva sends Vanara-s in search of Sita to southward which troop includes Hanuman, Jambavanta, Nila and others and Angada is its leader. Sugreeva gives a vivid picture of the southern side of Jambudvipa. Varada River (वरदा) is mentioned in Ramayana (4.41.9).[8].... and then the greatly auspicious Varada River which is an adoration to great Nagas. And the territories of Mekhala, Utkala, the cities of Dasharna, kingdoms of Abravanti, Avanti, and Vidarbha, also thus the charming kingdom of Mahihaka, are to be searched thoroughly. [4-41-9,10]

वरदा नदी

वरदा नदी (AS, p.832) महाराष्ट्र में वर्धा के निकट बहने वाली एक नदी है। इसका उल्लेख महाभारत, वनपर्व 85, 35 में भी हुआ है- 'वरदासंगमे स्नात्वा गोसहस्रफलं लभेत्।'. [9]

वरदातट

वरदातट (AS, p.832): वरदातट विदर्भ अथवा वरदा नदी के तटवर्ती प्रदेश को कहा जाता था, जिसका उल्लेख अकबर के दरबारी विद्वान अबुल फ़ज़ल ने 'आइना-ए-अकबरी' में भी किया है। ऐसा जान पड़ता है कि वरदा या वर्धा नदी के कांठे में स्थित होने के कारण ही विदर्भ या बरार के प्रदेश को मुग़ल काल में 'वरदा' कहा जाने लगा था। [10]


इतिहास प्रसिद्ध 'देवगाँव की संधि' के अनुसार बरार के भोंसला राजा ने अंग्रेज़ों को कटक का प्रान्त दे दिया था, जिसमें बालासौर के अलावा वरदा नदी के पश्चिम तक का समस्त भाग शामिल था। महाराष्ट्र का प्राचीन जयंती क्षेत्र (वर्तमान वनोशिला ग्राम) वरदा नदी के तट पर ही स्थित है। मुग़ल सम्राट अकबर के समकालीन अबुल फज़ल ने 'आइना-ए-अकबरी' में विदर्भ का नाम वरदातट लिखा है। संभवतः वरदा नदी (वर्धा) के निकट स्थित होने के कारण ही मुग़ल काल में विदर्भ का यह नाम प्रचलित हो गया था।[11]
