Devendra Jhajharia (देवेन्द्र झाझड़िया) is the only Indian to have won the gold at an ‘‘Paraolympics’’. He is the one-armed javelin thrower from Rajasthan. He was born in the family of Ram Singh Jhajharia and Jiwani Devi in village Jhajharian Ki Dhani, Panchayat Ratanpura in Rajgarh Tahsil in Churu district Rajasthan on 10th June 1981. [1] [2] He is recipient of Arjuna Award-2004, Padma Shri-2012, Khel Ratna-2017. He won Gold Medal in Paraolympics-2016 in Rio. He won Silver medal in 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan, from 25 August to 6 September 2021.

Early Life

Devendra Jhajharia was born in 1981 and hails from the Churu District in Rajasthan. At the age of eight, while climbing a tree he touched a live electric cable. He received medical attention but the doctors were forced to amputate his left hand.[3][4] In 1997 he was spotted by Dronacharya Awardee coach R.D. Singh while competing at a school sports day, and from that point was coached by Singh.

Personal life

A former Indian Railways employee, Jhajharia is currently employed with the Sports Authority of India. His wife, Manju, is a former nationally-ranked kabaddi player; the couple have a daughter, Jiya (aged six) and a son, Kavyan (aged two).[5]

Career

In 2002 Jhajharia won the gold medal in the 8th FESPIC Games in Korea.

In 2004 Jhajharia qualified for his first Summer Paralaympic Games representing India at Athens. At the games he set a new world record with a distance of 62.15m eclipsing the old one of 59.77m. The throw gave him the gold medal and he became only the second gold medalist at the Paralympics for his country (India's first gold medal came from Murlikant Petkar).[6]

His success in Athens saw him honoured with 2004 Arjuna Award.

He received India's prestigious Padma Shri Award in March 2012 from the President Of India becoming the first Paralympian to be honoured with the award.[7]

Further athletic success came in 2013 at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Lyon, France when he took the gold medal in the F46 javelin throw.


He followed this with a silver medal at the 2014 Asian Para Games at Incheon in South Korea. In 2014, he was honored with FICCI Para-Sportsperson of the year Award.[8]


At the 2015 IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha, despite throwing a personal best of 59.06, Jhajharia could only finish in second place, claiming silver behind China's Guo Chunliang, who threw a championship record distance. In 2016, he won a gold medal at the 2016 IPC Athletics Asia-Oceania Championship in Dubai. In the run up to the Rio Games he is being supported by the GoSports Foundation[9] through the Para Champions Programme.

In 2016, he won a gold medal at the 2016 IPC Athletics Asia-Oceania Championship in Dubai. At the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, he won the gold medal in the men's javelin throw F46 event, bettering his own 2004 record with a world-record throw of 63.97 metres.

Athletics World Championship-2013 at Lyon: Wins Gold Medal

Devendra Jhajhria, Javelin thrower, won a gold medal and comfortably surpassed the old record of 55.90m of Chunliang Guo of China by creating a new record in the F 42 men's event by throwing a distance of 57.04m on 22nd July 2013 at the IPC Athletics World Championship in Lyon, France.

The Para Olympic Committee of India announced cash prize of Rs. five lakh to him for this achievement. Earlier, Devendra Jhajhria, who is one armed Javelin thrower from Rajasthan, had won gold medal in the Javelin throw at the 2004 Summer Para Olympics at Athens. [10]

Other Achievements

On September 21, 2004 he had hurled the javelin to a distance of 62.15 metres at the Paralympic Games in Athens, creating a world record. Before him, no Indian had won a medal at the competition. Devendra is a Class IV employee with the Indian Railways. He had lost his left hand in an accident.

Jat Parivesh (Masik Pattar), December, 2011 writes: Notwithstanding physical challenges to his body, he has shown rare grit and courage to rise as a promising star as is proved by his achievements starting right from his school days to University and so on.

His main achievements include standing runners up and winning silver medal in Javellin throw in 1998 in MDS University, Ajmer; Winning three times (in 1999, 2000 and 2001) first position in the MDS University, Ajmer and also participating in Inter University All India Athletic Meets.

He has also won gold and silver medals in The British Handicapped Meet, National Handicapped Athletic Meet in addition to winning medal in Athens Olympics.

Maharana Pratap Puraskar 2005

Devendra Jhajharia has been awarded 'Arjuna Award' by the President of India, on the occasion of republic day 2012. Devendra Jhajharia was honoured by the Governor of Rajasthan on 10 June 2005 with the award of Maharana Pratap Puraskar, the highest award for games in Rajasthan. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 10000/-.

Gold Medal in Paraolympics-2016 in Rio

Javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia became the first Indian to clinch two gold medals at the Paralympics after he broke his own world record to clinch the top honours at the Rio Games here.

Devendra, who won his previous gold in the 2004 Athens Games, bettered his own world record to finish on top in the men’s F46 event.

Devendra, whose previous best was 62.15 metres (achieved in the 2004 Games), improved the mark with an attempt of 63.97 metres at the Olympic Stadium (Engenhao).

India now have two gold, one silver and one bronze in the ongoing edition of the Games.

Thangavelu Mariyappan had earlier struck gold in the men’s high jump, while Varun Bhati had secured a bronze in the same event.

Later, Deepa Malik won a silver in the women’s shot put event to add to the tally.

Devendra Jhajharia's journey to paralympics

The 35-year-old who is now employed by the Sports Authority of India as coach hails from a remote village in Churu district of Rajasthan. Now 2-time gold medallist lost his left arm when he was nine in an electric shock. In this interview with The Hindu, he says that he accidentally touched a live cable and nobody was sure whether he'd be able to recover from it.

With support from his parents, he was able to recover from the amputation of his left arm. He believes that "to be a champion, you had to be a sportsman" and that's what made him go after javelin.

From a district-level champion, he steadily moved up the ladder to state and in 2002 he went on to win his first gold when participated in the Para-Asian Games.

He was 23 when he won the gold at the 2004 Athens Games. His performance has been quite consistent in the decade after his big win. He won a silver at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.

When asked whether para-athletes get recognition as much as other sportsperson in India, he says, "For sure we don’t get our due. But para-sport is on the rise and slowly we are getting more recognition."

Jhajharia innovates to succeed in Paraolympics-2016

The key to any good javelin throw is the balance and that's where Devendra Jhajharia has to innovate. "With one hand holding the javelin, the other arm has to create the right balance so that the body is perfectly poised at the time of the throw," Sports Authority of India athletics coach Sunil Tanwar, currently based in Hissar (Haryana), told TOI on Wednesday. Tanwar has been working with Jhajharia for the past few months.

"For him, the main thing is to get the balance right as he does not have the second arm," the coach explained. "Our main task during training has been focused on that." To develop a proper balance, Jhajharia had to do a lot of running. "There are many exercises to improve your balance, but they need active participation of both arms, like training with the medicine ball," Tanwar explained. "Obviously, Jhajharia could not do all that. So, we used innovative techniques while running."


Tanwar had accompanied Jhajharia during a four-month training stint under the government's TOP Scheme to Kuortane in Finland - a buildup for the Games. "Many of the world's leading throwers were there and they were consistently going over 85m. That inspired Jhajharia a lot," Tanwar said. "The infrastructure is very good there and that stint made a huge difference for him. He was regularly going over 60m and we were sure he would win the gold medal."


Tanwar added that weather in Finland suited Jhajharia and following a four-hour training session, two hours of rest was enough for him to recuperate. "By evening, he would again be ready for training." Coming in contact with world class throwers like Kenya's Julius Yego, who went on to win the silver at Rio Olympics, helped Jhajharia immensely. "His confidence was very high and that showed in his throws."


Unfortunately, Jhajharia picked up an injury in his right shoulder while training in Finland. "Although it wasn't very serious, doctors advised him to restrict his throws," Tanwar informed. So, towards the later part of his training, Jhajharia had to concentrate on strengthening exercises, while restricting his throws to around 40m."The doctors said he could go all out in only one event and we decided that one event had to be the Paralympic Games."

देवेन्द्र झाझड़िया का जीवन परिचय

देवेन्द्र झाझड़िया का प्रारंभिक जीवन - देवेन्द्र झाझड़िया का जन्म गाँव झाझड़िया की ढाणी, तहसील राजगढ़, जिला चुरू राजस्थान में हुआ. आपके पिता का नाम रामसिंह झाझड़िया तथा माता का नाम जीवनी देवी है. जब वह 7-8 वर्ष के थे तो उनका बायाँ हाथ बिजली दुर्घटना में गमाना पड़ा. आपके पिता ने पढ़ने के लिए राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग-65 पर स्थित रतनपुरा गाँव में भेजा. रतनपुरा को हडियाल स्टेशन के नाम से जाना जाता है. वहां से आपने 10 वीं तक की पढाई की.

कुछ कर गुजरने के जज्बात - देवेन्द्र के विकलांग होते हुए भी उनके मन में कुछ कर गुजरने के जज्बात थे. पढाई के साथ-साथ आपको अभावपूर्ण तथा सुविधाहीन स्थिति में भी रेत के धोरों के बीच भाला फैंकने का सनक सवार हुआ. पहले खेत से सरकंडे तोड़ उन्हें भाले की तरह फैंकना शुरू किया, फिर उसके साथ -साथ खेजड़ी पेड़ की लकड़ियों से भाला बनाकर एकलव्य की भांति अभ्यास शुरू किया. गाँव के स्कूल में भाला नहीं था. पिता रामसिंह की आर्थिक स्थिति ऐसी नहीं थी कि भला खरीद सकें. देवेन्द्र रोजाना स्थानीय रूप से बनाया गया भाला फैंकने का 5-6 घंटे प्रयास करने लगा. धीरे-धीरे वह भाला फेंकने में पारंगत हो गया और कक्षा 10 वीं में ही जिलास्तरीय एथलेटिक्स टूर्नामेंट में पहली बार स्वर्ण पदक हासिल किया. प्रथम बार स्वर्ण पदक हासिल करने के बाद उसने कभी भी पीछे मुड़कर नहीं देखा. देवेन्द्र के 10 वीं परीक्षा उत्तीर्ण होते ही आर.डी. सिंह कोच उसको अपने साथ ले गए और हनुमानगढ़ कस्बे की नेहरू कालेज में भर्ती कराया और कोच ने तैयारी शुरू करवादी. यहाँ से देवेन्द्र नें बी.ए. वाई. एम.डी.एस. अजमेर यूनिवर्सिटी से सन 2001 में पास की.

सन 1995 में आल इण्डिया यूनिवर्सिटी गेम्स में 67 मीटर की दूरी तक भाला फेंकने का रिकार्ड बनाया तो एक नयी पहचान मिली. उसके बाद 1998 तक विश्वविद्यालय स्तर पर प्रथम रहने से लेकर राष्ट्रीय स्तर तक की विकलांग स्पर्धाओं तथा वर्ष 2002 में 8 वें बुसान एसियाड में स्वर्ण जीतकर भारत का परचम लहराया. वर्ष 2003 में ब्रिटिश थ्रो, ट्रिपल जम्प और शाट-फूट तीनों स्पर्धाओं में तीन स्वरण पदक जीते.

देवेन्द्र का दुर्भाग्य - पिछले दो वर्षों में देवेन्द्र के उत्कृष्ट प्रदर्शन से ही उनका चयन ओलम्पिक खेलों के लिए हुआ था. देवेन्द्र के पिता कहते हैं कि अच्छी रेंज की प्रतियोगिता के लिए उपयोग किया जाने वाला भाला 4-5 लाख रुपये में आता है जिसे खरीद पाना हमारे बस में नहीं है. देवेन्द्र का यह दुर्भाग्य रहा कि उसने शुरू में सहायता के लिए प्रयास किये परन्तु न तो राजस्थान सरकार ने और न खेल संस्थाओं ने उसको सगयोग किया.

रामस्वरूप जी आर्य ने प्रथम बार 2002 के बुसान एसियाड में खेलने जाने के लिए 75 हजार रुपये की सहायता भेजी. बुसान स्वर्ण पदक पाने के बाद अमेरिका प्रवासी खेल प्रेमी रामस्वरूप आर्य, कालीरावण, हरयाणा ने देवेन्द्र के लिए एक अंतर्राष्ट्रीय स्तर का भाला भेजा. जिसे 26 सितम्बर 2002 को रुस्तमे हिंद दारासिंह ने यह भाला देवेन्द्र को राजगढ़ में भेंट किया. देवेन्द्र ने ब्रिटिश ओलम्पिक 2003 और एथेंस ओलम्पिक 2004 में इस भाले की लाज रखी.

रेतीले धोरों पर नंगे पैरों के अभ्यस्त देवेन्द्र के लिए केवल भाले का अभाव ही समस्या नहीं थी उसके लिए जूते पहन कर सिंथेटिक टर्फ पर दौड़ लगाना भी बहुत बड़ी बाधा थी. लेकिन सभी अभाओं और बाधाओं के बावजूद भी कुछ कर दिखाया, नया रिकार्ड बनाया, राष्ट्र के लिए स्वर्ण पदक जुटाया, और देश का नाम रोशन किया.

एथेंस ओलम्पिक में स्वर्ण पदक - देवेन्द्र ने 21 सितम्बर 2004 में एथेंस ओलम्पिक में जेवलियन थ्रो में नया विश्व रिकार्ड बनाया, राष्ट्र के लिए पहली बार ओलम्पिक में 1945 के बाद पिछले 50 वर्ष में स्वर्ण पदक दिलाकर राष्ट्र को गौरवान्वित किया. पूर्व के अपने ही रिकार्ड 59.77 मीटर को तोड़कर पांचवें राऊंड में 62.15 मीटर भाला फेंका. राष्ट्रीय धुन के साथ वहां उपस्थित भारतीय मूल के लोग ख़ुशी के मारे झूम उठे. देवेन्द्र के एथेंस पैरा ओलम्पिक 2004 में स्वर्ण पदक पाने के समाचार की पहले पहल बीबीसी ने खबर प्रसारित की थी, लेकिन भारतीय मीडिया सोया रहा. राष्ट्रपति ए. पी. जे. अब्दुल कलाम, प्रधानमंत्री, खेलमंत्री सुनीलदत्त आदि ने बधाई सन्देश भेजे.

झाझड़िया को क्यों भूली सरकार - लेकिन राजस्थान सरकार ने बधाई सन्देश का कष्ट नहीं उठाया. देवेन्द्र झाझड़िया को बधाई तो दूर की बात है देश के प्रिंट और इलेक्ट्रोनिक मीडिया ने भी एक अक्षर तक नहीं लिखा जबकि एक अन्य उच्च खानदानी 'रजत पदक' विजेता के घर, परिवार, गाँव, शयन-कक्ष आदि के चित्र छापकर गुणगान करने में कोई कसर नहीं छोडी. देवेन्द्र झाझडिया एक गाँव का किसान का बेटा था. उसको स्वर्ण पदक लाने पर जो सुविधाएँ मिलनी चाहिए थीं वे नहीं मिली तब प्रिंट मीडिया, महानगर टाइम्स, इवनिंग पोस्ट जयपुर ने अपने सम्पादकीय में लिखा 'झाझड़िया को क्यों भूली सरकार'. तब राजस्थान सरकार चेती और वहां के खेलमंत्री युनूस खान ने 133 देशों में पैरा ओलम्पिक में 50 साल बाद पहली बार स्वर्ण पदक दिलाने वाले देवेन्द्र झाझडिया को 21 अक्टूबर 2004 को 11 लाख रुपये का चेक दिया और सम्मानित किया. बाद में उसको अर्जुन अवार्ड भी दिया गया.


अर्जुन अवार्ड - राष्ट्रपति भवन में देवेन्द्र झाझडिया को अर्जुन अवार्ड 29 अगस्त 2005 में राष्ट्रपति ए.पी.जे अब्दुल कलाम द्वारा दिया गया. महाराणा प्रताप पुरस्कार-स्टेट स्पोर्ट्स अवार्ड 2004 तथा पीसीआई आउट स्टैंडिंग स्पोर्ट्स पर्सन अवार्ड 2005 भी मिला.

देवेन्द्र झाझडिया बिलासपुर (छत्तीसगढ़) रेलवे में ओ.एस. कर्मचारी लगे हैं. बिलासपुर रेलवे ने देवेन्द्र को एक लाख रुपये, निशुल्क क्वार्टर तथा खेलों की तैयारी की पूरी छोट दे रखी है.

पद्मश्री अवार्ड

पद्मश्री अवार्ड दिए जाने की सूचना देवेन्द्र को 25 जनवरी 2012 को 2 बजे दोपहर भारत सरकार गृह मंत्रालय से दूरभास पर मिली. गुरुवार 22 मार्च 2012 को महामहिम श्रीमती प्रतिभा देवी सिंह पाटिल ने राष्ट्रपति भवन नई दिल्ली में शाम को आयोजित समारोह में खेल के क्षेत्र में उल्लेखनीय योगदान के लिए देवेन्द्र झाझडिया को पद्मश्री से सम्मानित किया गया. समारोह में राष्ट्रपति महोदया देवेन्द्र की पत्नी मंजू श्री को राजस्थानी वेशभूषा में देखकर बेहद खुश हुई. शाम को टी.वी. पर समारोह का कार्यक्रम दिखाया गया तो उसके पैतृक गाँव झाझडिया की ढाणी मेंउत्सव का माहौल था और मिठाइयाँ बांटी गयीं.

30 लाख का पुरस्कार

नई दिल्ली के शास्त्री भवन में पैरा ओलम्पिक खिलाड़ी देवेन्द्र झाझडिया को 30 लाख का पुरस्कार खेल विभाग भारत सरकार के संयुक्त सचिव आई. श्री निवास ने प्रदान किया. एथेंस पैरा ओलम्पिक-2004 में भारत को विश्व रिकोर्ड के साथ स्वर्ण पदक दिलवाने वाले खिलाड़ी को यह पुरस्कार 2004 में न मिलकर 6 वर्ष बाद वर्ष 2010 में मिला !!!

लियोन शहर में दूसरी बार स्वर्ण पदक: श्री देवेन्द्र झाझडिया द्वारा पद्मश्री, अर्जुन अवार्ड, एथेंस में पैरा ओलम्पिक में भारत को स्वर्ण पदक दिलाकर एवं इसके पूर्व भी अनेक कीर्तिमान स्थापित कर राजस्थान और खासकर चूरू जिले के साथ ही समाज का नाम रोशन किया है। श्री देवेन्द्र झाझडिया ने 21 जुलाई 2013 में फ्रांस के लियोन शहर में दूसरी बार स्वर्ण पदक प्राप्त कर मौजूदा विश्व रैंकिंग में शीर्ष स्थान पर काबिज हैं। इससे हमारा सर गर्व से ऊंचा किया है।

इंचियोन दक्षिण कोरिया में पैरा एशियन गेम्स में रजत पदक

इंचियोन दक्षिण कोरिया में पैरा एशियन गेम्स में देवेंद्र झाझड़िया ने जेवलीन थ्रो में रजत पदक प्राप्त कर देश का नाम रोशन किया है। झाझड़िया ने 58.45 मीटर की दूरी तय करते हुए पदक प्राप्त किया।

स्वर्ण पदक चीन के ग्वाऊ च्युयानलिंग ने 58.89 मीटर में जीता कास्य पदक ईरान के मीर शेखरी ने 52.70 मीटर की दूरी तय कर जीता। भारत पदक तालिका में दो स्वर्ण, पांच रजत, पांच कास्य के साथ 11वें नम्बर पर चल रहा है। चीन 37 स्वर्ण, के साथ एक नंबर पर बरकरार है। राजस्थान के संदीप मान जगसीर सिंह लम्बी कूद में पाचवें छठें स्थान पर रहे। पैरा एशियन में झाझड़िया के रजत पदक प्राप्त करने की सूचना मिलने पर गांव परिवार में खुशी का माहौल बना हुआ है। परिजनों ग्रामीणों ने मिठाईयां बांटकर खुशियां मनाई। पिता रामसिंह झाझड़िया, मां जीणी देवी, भाई महेंद्र, जोगेंद्र, प्रमोद, राजकुमार, संदीप झाझड़िया पुत्री जिया आदि ने लड्‌डू बांटकर खुशी का इजहार किया। पैरा एशियन में रजत पदक के साथ देवेंद्र झाझड़िया की उपलब्धियों में एक ओर पदक शामिल हो गया है। अभी तक झाझड़िया अंतर्राष्ट्रीय प्रतियोगिता में अनेक पदक जीत चुके है, इनमें 2002 पैरा एशियन में स्वर्ण पदक, 2003 ब्रिटिश ऑपन में स्वर्ण पदक, 2004 ऐथेन्स पैरालाम्पिक में स्वर्ण पदक विश्व रिकाॅर्ड के साथ जीतने वाले प्रथम भारतीय बने। 2006 मलेशिया ऑपन में स्वर्ण पदक, 2007 वर्ल्ड गेम में रजत पदक, 2009 वर्ल्ड गेम में स्वर्ण पदक, 2013 में वर्ल्ड चेंपियनशीप में स्वर्ण पदक प्राप्त किया।

चेंपियनशिप में स्वर्ण पदक जीतने वाले प्रथम भारतीय बने। इन सभी उपलब्धियों को ध्यान में रखते हुए 2004 में भारत के राष्ट्रपति द्वारा विशेष योग्यता पुरस्कार प्रदान किया गया। झाझड़िया की असाधारण खेल प्रदर्शन की सराहना करते हुए राष्ट्रपति ने 2005 में खेलों का सर्वोच्च पुरस्कार अर्जुन अवार्ड प्रदान किया। राजस्थान के महाराणा मेवाड़ फाउंडेशन की ओर से 2007 का अरावली सम्मान प्रदान किया गया। झाझड़िया की असाधारण प्रतिभा का पुनः स्मरण करते हुए राष्ट्रपति ने पद्मश्री सम्मान प्रदान किया। राज्य सरकार भी उन्हें 2005 में महाराणा प्रताप पुरस्कार दे चुकी है।

खेल रत्‍न पुरस्‍कार 2017

खेल रत्‍न पुरस्‍कार की घोषणा कर दी गई है। इस बार खेल रत्‍न पुरस्‍कार रियो पैरालिंपिक में गोल्‍ड जीतकर इतिहास रचने वाले खिलाड़ी देवेंद्र झाझरिया और हॉकी खिलाड़ी सरदार सिंह को दिया जाएगा। इस बार यह पुरस्‍कार संयुक्‍त रूप से इन दोनों खिलाड़ियों को देने का फैसला किया गया है। रियो पैरालिंपिक (2016) में विश्‍व रिकॉर्ड बनाते हुए गोल्‍ड मेडल जीतने वाले देवेंद्र झाझरिया (36) जेवलिन थ्रो की एफ46 स्‍पर्द्धा में हिस्‍सा लेते हैं। वह 2004 में एथेंस में भी इस स्‍पर्द्धा में गोल्‍ड जीत चुके हैं। देवेंद्र जब आठ साल के थे, तो पेड़ पर चढ़ने के दौरान एक बिजली के तार की चपेट में आ गए थे. उनको बचाने के लिए डॉक्‍टरों को उनका बायां हाथ काटना पड़ा. देवेंद्र झाझरिया राजस्‍थान के चुरू जिले से ताल्‍लुक रखने वाले हैं। देवेंद्र झाझरिया का जन्म 10 जून, 1981 में राजस्थान के चुरू जिले में हुआ था।
