Maharaja Balwant Singh (1820 - 1853) (महाराजा बलवंत सिंह, भरतपुर) was the ruler of princely state Bharatpur (1825 - 1853) and successor of Maharaja Baldeo Singh.

Reign of Maharaja Balwant Singh

He was born at Jawahar Bagh, Bharatpur on 5th February 1820, was the only son of Maharaja Baldeo Singh by his wife Maharani Miraj Kaur. He succeeded on the death of his father on 26th February 1825.

He was seized and imprisoned in the Fort at Bharatpur 28th March 1825, by his cousin Rao Durjan Sal. The British armies laid siege to the Fort and freed the infant Maharaja on 19th January 1826.

He was installed on the gadi on 5th February 1826. He was married to the princess of Pichhore in 1827. He arrested Bholanath Diwan and his colleagues when became young. He reigned under the Regency of his mother until her deposition and then under a Council of Superintendence until he came of age and was invested with full ruling powers in 1835.

In 1842, he got the state of Ballabhgarh transferred to the Jat ruler with the help of British government.

He got his only son Maharaja Jaswant Singh in 1850. The people of Bharatpur were happy during his reign. He always tried for the welfare of the people of his state.

He died at Bharatpur on 21st March 1853, having had issue, an only son. His successor was Maharaja Jaswant Singh.

महाराज बलवन्तसिंह

ठाकुर देशराज लिखते हैं कि अंग्रेंजो ने भरतपुर को विजय करने के पश्चात् वहीं दरबार किया और उसी दरबार में 5 फरवरी सन् 1826 ई. को महाराज बलवन्तसिंह को राज-गद्दी दी गई। मांजी श्रीमती अमृतकौर की रेजेन्सी में राज्य-प्रबन्ध सौंपा गया। संवत् 1884 विक्रमी (1827 ई.) में महाराज का पिछोरवाल राजपुत्री से विवाह हुआ। महाराज ने युवा होते ही भोलानाथ दीवान और उसके साथियों को कैद कर लिया। संवत् 1899 (1842 ई.) में लार्ड एलनवरा से मिलकर आपने बल्लभगढ़ के राजा को पुनः उसका राज दिलाया।

संवत् 1907 विक्रमी (1850 ई.) में आपको पुत्र लाभ हुआ जिनका शुभ नाम महाराज यशवंतसिंह रखा गया। आपकी प्रजा आपसे बहुत प्रसन्न थी। आप भी प्रजा की प्रसन्नता के लिए सदैव प्रयत्न करते रहते थे। इस प्रकार 27 वर्ष सुख-शांति के साथ राज करके 21वीं मार्च सन् 1853 ई. को आप इस संसार से पधार गये। महाराज काव्य-प्रेमी थे। उनके दरबार में कई कवि रहते थे। वह स्वयं भी कविता करते थे।[1]

दलीपसिंह अहलावत लिखते हैं - गुड़गांव जिले के पहाकी गांव के रावत जाट की पुत्री राजकौर भरतपुर नरेश महाराजा बलवन्तसिंह (सन् 1826-1853) की महारानी थी।[2]


ठाकुर देशराज[3] ने लिखा है ....भरतपुर शहर में जमने और अपने मिशन को आगे बढ़ाने में मुझे सबसे अधिक मदद चौधरी गोवर्धनसिंह खरेटावाले से मिली। आपकी फूफी रानी गुमान कौर महाराजा बलवंत सिंह को ब्याही थी। आपका जन्म गाँव मुडियापुरा, तहसील बाह, जिला आगरा के इंदोलिया घराने में ठाकुर पीतम सिंह के यहाँ करीब 50 साल पहले हुआ।
