History

Pahadsar village was a Khalsa village not ruled by any Thakur Jagirdar but directly controlled by Raja of Bikaner. It was under Numberdar and last numberdar was Amar Singh Punia.

Paharsar was founded by Gyana Ram Punia after his grandfather named Paharu. Gyana Ram Punia came from nearby village Dhandhal. He was descendant of Lakshi Punia. Lakshi Punia’s descendants founded seven villages named Dhandhal Shera, Dhandhal Lekhoo, Dhandhal Taal, Gulpura, Narwasi, Mithi Redu and Paharsar.

Hira Singh Chahar (हीरासिंह चाहर), a social reformer, folk-singer and freedom fighter, was born in this village on 17 January 1901 in the family of Laxman Ram Chahar, who joined Arya Samaj at the age of fourteen and spread the doctrine of Arya Samaj in remote villages of Rajasthan. Shri Hira Singh took active participation in India’s freedom movement, worked in rural areas to change mindsets to educate young girls, eradicate child marriage, and tirelessly worked to get rid of social rituals like मृत्यु भोज (feast after death), usually organized supposedly for liberation of the soul of the dead, which literally bankrupted farmer families.

Hira Singh was moved by the declaration of "Purna Swaraj” by the Indian National Congress and speeches by its leaders, especially by Mahatma Gandhi in 1930 at the Lahore session which culminated in a public declaration on 26 January 1930 to celebrate as ‘Independence Day.’ Rajasthan/Rajputana consisted of princely states, and citizens of the state were untouched by freedom movement. Hira Singh decided to sell off the business and move the family back to Paharsar in 1932. He immersed himself in the freedom movement, was part of Praja Parishad Bikaner, and as a result of this Maharaja of Bikaner, Shri Ganga Singh deported (“देश निकाला”) him from his kingdom. He put his life in danger multiple time including in Dabra(डाबड़ा) Kand, dated March 13th, 1947, in which Jaghirdars got together in a bid to crush the political awakening among the Kisan. Jaghirdars and their henchmen, wielding guns and swords attacked the participants, killed some and badly injured many. Hira Singh barely survived, yet he helped provide first-aid to the wounded and help transport injured to nearby hospitals. During this freedom movement, he worked with great leaders like Mathuradas Mathur, Choudhary Hans Raj Arya, Kumbharam Arya, Baldev Ram Mirdha and many famous leaders of that time.

After independence, he tirelessly worked in rural western Rajasthan to spread the importance of education among farmers and especially girl’s education. There were old practices (कुरीतियां) like early marriages, and making feast for a large number of people on the 12th/13th day of death in the families. These मृत्यु भोज (feast after death) were organized at a very large scale, and were costly affairs and, as a result of these, farmers were getting bankrupt and losing their precious farmland to professional money-lenders because they were borrowing against farmland by way of mortgaging land. In the case that any individual didn’t organize such a feast due to poor economic conditions of the family, they were ridiculed and labeled as a miser. He fearlessly worked to eliminate such practices from the root and dedicated all of his life for the advancement of the society until his passing in 1993.

His post-independence contributions to speak against the Zamindari system, also known as Begari - forced labor, and protest against atrocities committed by Jaghirdars & Zamindars against poor farmers are notable. First few decades of post-independence were very tumultuous for the farmers due to British creating Zamindari system, which was consisted of a maze of intermediaries, and multiple taxes levied upon farmers without land rights. Hira Singh worked and propagated government efforts to abolish Zamindari system, tenancy reforms and land ceiling reforms, which brought real freedom to farmers of Rajasthan. Hira Singh participated in the event organized at Nagaur on Oct 2nd, 1959 to adopt the Panchayati Raj, which was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

Hira Singh was very well-versed with seven languages, namely Hindi, Marwari, Punjabi / Gurmukhi, English, Urdu & Sanskrit. His medium of communication with the rural population was to have dialogue in simple and easy-to-understand language with villagers and conversing with them in simple poems and Bhajans. Some of his poem verses:

Hajari Lal Chahar - Son of Hira Singh Chahar, freedom fighter. Looks after the charitable trust in the name of his father. Retired from Army Medical Corps. He is the only person from Paharsar who has worked with Army Medical Corps(AMC).
