This holy town is famous for its temple of Krishna which houses the Shrinathji, a 14th century "infant" incarnation idol (murti-Swaroop) of Krishna. The idol was moved in the 17th century from Govardhan hill, near Mathura along holy river Yamuna, to protect it from the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's campaign against Hindu worship in his empire.

Legend and History

Statue of Shrinathji at Nathdwara

Baba Ghasi Ram (born:1629 - death:18 June 1684 AD) hailed from village Akola, the the famous village of chahar Jats, situated in Agra district in Uttar Pradesh. He devoted his life opposing the oppressions of Mugal rule in India and protection of Hinduism. During 17th centiry , unsuccessful in his attempts to convert Hindus to Islam, the fury of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb was directed towarsds a massive destruction of the Hindu temples. At this moment the black marble statue of Shrinathji was brought from Mathura by Baba Ghasi Ram to save it from the fanatic inconoclasm of Aurangzeb. The legends have it that when the idol of the Lord Krishna was being transferred to a safer place from Vrindaban to protect it from the destructive wrath of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb and when the idol reached this spot, the wheels of bullock cart it was traveling in sank axle-deep in mud and refused to move any farther. The accompanying priest realised that this was Lord's chosen spot and the Lord did not want to travel any farther. Accordingly, a Temple was built there. This is a temple and place of pilgrimage amongst its believers.

The statue has one of its arms raised, giving an impression of Lord Krishna holding the Govardhan Mountain. The other arm seems to be giving a blessing as well as holding a dance posture. The place where this statue of Shrinathji was installed has developed into popular Hindu pilgrimage known as Nathdwara temple.
