Hans (हंस)[1][2] [3] Hans (हांस) Han (हाँ) is a gotra of Jats found in Punjab, India and Pakistan. In Punjab its pronounced as 'हांस'. They are also found in Europe (German, Hans/Hanz). Dilip Singh Ahlawat has mentioned it as one of the ruling Jat clans in Central Asia. [4] Hans is a clan of Munda people derived from swan.

Origin

They are said to be originated from King Hansa (हंस) of Mahabharata period. He was an ally of Jarasandha.

Mention by Panini

Hansaka (हंसक) is name of a place mentioned by Panini in Ashtadhyayi under Pakshadi (पक्षादि) (4.2.80.12) group. [5]

History

H.A. Rose writes that Hans (हांस) is a small Jat clan found in Jind, Ludhiana, Multan and Montgomery. In the latter District it has a Sidh, Baba Sulaiman, at Hans, to whom bridal pairs make offerings. The name appears to be connected with hane, a swan or goose. In these two latter districts it is classed both as Jat and Rajput, but as Jat, alone, in Multan, and in Ludhiana. [6]

B S Dahiya[7] writes: They are also found in Europe (German, Hans/Hanz). They are originally placed in the Puranas on the banks of river Nalini in Central Asia, along with the Tomars. [8] Vayu Purana says it was a hilly area,[9] and Mahabharata says it was a Maleccha country. [10] The River Nalini is said to arise from the Bindusarovar, identified with Aling-Kangri range by S. Muzaffar Ali.[11] The same authority correctly identifies Nalini with Yang-tse river. Sabha Parva mentions them with the Paur, Kundmān and Sibi.[12]

Hukum Singh Panwar (Pauria)[13] writes that Varahamihira discusses five species of superior classes of human beings (Indians) under five Denominations, i.e. Hans, Sasa, Rucaka, Bhadra and Malviya. He gives details of Hamsa[14] (Hansamarga or Hans). Height span and girth 96 angulas or 72 inches each, red face shining like gold, plum cheeks, raised nose, round head, eyes like honey, red nails, weight 1600 palas, aged 90 years and rules over Khasas, Surasenas, Gandhara and Antarvedi. Hamsa or Hansa is also an important tribe among the Jats.

In Rajatarangini

Rajatarangini[15] tells us....When Garga went to Visharākuta in Mandala, the king caused Sadda, Hamsaratha and Nonaratha to be brought to him by messengers. The wicked king tortured them by sparks of fire and points of needle and left them all but dead. (p.38)

Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 13 gives the List of Kshatriyas who joined Jarasandha: Hansa (हंस) and Dimvaka (डिभक) are mentioned together.[17]

Hans - The Hans clan claims descent from a Qureshi Arab who settled in Pakka Sidhar in Sahiwal District. His descendants intermarried with the Jat tribes of the neighbourhood, and as such became Jat. Found in Sahiwal, Khanewal, Layyah and Bhakkar districts.
