Vatadhana (वाटधान) was one of The Mahabharata Tribes and a country subjugated by Nakula in West. The Vatadhana country was located probably near Madhyamika (Chittorgarh) and Pushkar (Ajmer) in Rajasthan. V S Agarwal identifies it with Bhatinda (Punjab). [1]They fought Mahabharata War in Kaurava's side.

1) Vāṭadhāna (वाटधान).— A Kṣatriya King. This King was born from a portion of the asura Krodhavaśa (Mahābhārata, Ādi Parva, Chapter 63, Stanza 67).

2) Vāṭadhāna (वाटधान).—A country in ancient India. The people of this country were called the Vāṭadhānas. The following information is available about them from the Mahābhārata.

2) (i) Nakula defeated the Vāṭadhānas who were Kṣatriyas at the time of his regional conquest. (Mahābhārata Sabhā Parva, Chapter 32, Stanza 8).

2) (ii) Once the Kauravas surrounded this country which abounded in wealth and food. (Mahābhārata Udyoga Parva, Chapter 19, Stanza 31).

2) (iii) Vāṭadhāna was one of the foremost countries in India. (Mahābhārata Bhīṣma Parva, Chapter 9, Stanza 47).

2) (iv) In the Garuḍa Vyūha of the army formed by Bhīṣma, Aśvatthāmā and the Vāṭadhānas stood at the head of disposition, in the Bhārata-Battle. (Mahābhārata Bhīṣma Parva, Chapter 27, Stanza 4).

2) (v) Once Śrī Kṛṣṇa defeated the Vāṭadhānas. (Mahābhārata Droṇa Parva, Chapter 11, Stanza, 17).

Modern descendants from Vatadhana

Sandhya Jain [2] includes Vatadhana (वाटधान) in the Mahabharata Tribes listed on Kaurava side and mentions them as an important Jat and Brahmin clan descended from Mahabharata tribe, mentioned in geography (VI.10.45), who sided with the Kauravas in the Great War (VI.52.4); hailed from Varana near Kurukshetra (V.19.30). ‎

Their modern descendants are found among Jats as Vatdhan (वाटधान), Vattadhana (वाटधान), Batdhan (बाटधान), Batar (बाटड़).

Vatadhana (वाटधान) is mentioned in Mahabharata (I.61.58), (II.29.7),(V.19.30),(VI.10.45), (VI.52.4), (VIII.51.16),


Adi Parva, Mahabharata/Book I Chapter 61 gives genealogy of the Danavas, Asuras, Kauravas, Pandavas, Gandharvas, Apsaras, Rakshasas. Vatadhana (वाटधान) is mentioned in Mahabharata (I.61.58).[3].... from the tribe of Asuras called Krodhavasa, were born many heroic kings on earth. These include Ashada, and Vayuvega, and also Bhumitejas; Ekalavya, Sumitra, Vatadhana, Gomukha; .....


Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 29 mentions the Countries subjugated by Nakula in West. Vatadhana (वाटधान) is mentioned in Mahabharata (II.29.7).[4] .....Nakula first assailed the mountainous country called Rohitaka (Rohtak) that was dear unto (the celestial generalissimo) Kartikeya and which was delightful and prosperous and full of kine and every kind of wealth and produce. He then encountered Mattamyurakas, subjugated the whole of the desert country and the region known as Sairishaka (Sirsa) full of plenty, as also that other one called Mahetta (Meham). And the hero had a fierce encounter with the royal sage Akrosa. Then he left that part of the country having subjugated the Dasarnas, the Sivis, the Trigartas, the Amvashtas, the Malavas, the five tribes of the Karnatas, and those twice born classes that were called the Madhyamakeyas and Vatadhanas.


Udyoga Parva/Mahabharata Book V Chapter 19 mentions the Kings and tribes Who joined Duryodhana for war. Vatadhana (वाटधान) is mentioned in Mahabharata (V.19.30).[5] .....And thus Duryodhana had a force..., there was no space in the city of Hastinapura. And for this reason the land of the five rivers, and the whole of the region called Kuru-jangala, and the forest of Rohitaka which was uniformly wild, and Ahichhatra and Kalakuta, and the banks of the Ganga, and Varana, and Vatadhana, and the hill tracts on the border of the Yamuna--the whole of this extensive tract--full of abundant corn and wealth, was entirely overspread with the army of the Kauravas.


Bhisma Parva, Mahabharata/Book VI Chapter 10 describes the geography of Bharatavarsha. Vatadhana (वाटधान) province is mentioned in Mahabharata (VI.10.45). [6]....The province of Vatadhana has been mentioned with Mallas, Sudeshnas, Prahutas, Mahishas, Karshikas; Vahikas, Vatadhanas, Abhiras, and Kalatoyakas


Bhisma Parva, Mahabharata/Book VI Chapter 52 mentions them in the army of the Kauravas. Vatadhana (वाटधान) is mentioned in Mahabharata (VI.52.4). [7].....And those renowned warriors, Aswatthama and Kripa, supported by the Trigartas, the Matsyas, the Kekayas, and the Vatadhanas, were in its head.


Karna Parva/Mahabharata Book VIII Chapter 51 mentions that on Seventeenth day terrible massacre, Numberless Kshatriyas hailing from diverse provinces destroyed. This list includes Vatadhanas in verse (VIII.51.16). [8]...Teeming with horses and elephants, large bodies of combatants of diverse Kshatriya clans, such as the Govasas, the Dasameyas, the Vasatis, and the Varatyas, the Vatadhanas, and the Bhojas that are very sensitive of their honour, approaching thee and Bhima,....

वाटधान

वाटधान (AS, p.838): वाटधान नामक एक ऐतिहासिक स्थान का उल्लेख महाभारत, सभापर्व 328 में हुआ है, जो सम्भवत: मध्यमिका और पुष्कर (ज़िला अजमेर, राजस्थान) के निकट स्थित था। पाण्डव नकुल ने अपनी दिग्विजय यात्रा के दौरान इस पर अधिकार प्राप्त किया था- 'तथा माध्यमिकांश्चैव वाटधानान् द्विजानथ पुनश्च परिवृत्याथ पुष्करारण्यवासिनः।' प्रसिद्ध इतिहासकार डॉ. वासुदेव शरण अग्रवाल के मत में यह भटिंडा का इलाका है। (दे. ‘कादंबिनी’ अक्टूबर, 62). वाटधान जाट जनपद

दलीप सिंह अहलावत [10] ने लिखा है कि महाभारतकाल में भारतवर्ष के अनेक जनपदों में इस वाटधान जाट जनपद की भी विद्यमानता है (भीष्मपर्व, अध्याय 9)। पाण्डवों की दिग्विजय में नकुल ने पश्चिम दिशा के सब नरेशों को जीत लिया। उसने इन वाटधान देशीय क्षत्रियों को भी हराया। (महाभारत सभापर्व, अध्याय 32)। महाभारत युद्ध में वाटधान सैनिक दुर्योधन की ओर होकर पाण्डवों के विरुद्ध लड़े थे। (भीष्मपर्व) वाटधान जाटगोत्र के लोग सम्पूर्णतया सिख मतानुयायी हैं।
