Khemkaran Sogaria fighting with Tiger

Khem Karan Sogaria (खेमकरण सोगरिया) (born:14.1.1680- 1732 AD) was Jat chieftain of Bharatpur in the Sogaria clan, originally from Tuhiya in Bharatpur, Rajasthan. A Jat king of the Sogariya clan, Rustam, laid the foundation of the modern city of Bharatpur. After him, control passed on to his son, Khemkaran which was then taken over by Maharaja Suraj Mal. Khemkaran was a great warrior. He was awarded with the title of "Faujdar", which is still used by all Sogariyas. [1]

Maharaja Surajmal conquered the site of Bharatpur from Khemkaran Sogaria, the son of Rustam, in the year 1732 and established the Bharatpur town in the year 1743.

Variants of name

A great warrior

Khemkaran was warrior born in Sogarwars. He had stopped all the roads passing by this area for convoys of Aurangzeb. He along with his friend Ramki Chahar created a terror among the Mughal circles in the Agra, Dholpur and Gwalior region. The Mugal sardars were terrified due to their anti-imperialist activities. Bharatpur was part of his state. He is said to be so strong that he could kill two tigers at a time on both sides with a dagger. The Mughal emperor had to award him the title of Faujdar to pacify the Jat and assigned him the duty of ensuring safe passage of the passengers through this area.

He was a kind hearted and charitable person. It is said that he used to take lunch after sounding dhons loudly and had issued instructions to his men that those want to take part in the SAHBHOJ [community kitchen] must be allowed to join him freely. [2]

Raja Khemkaran Singh

Khem Karan Sogaria given Jagir in 1713

G.C.Dwivedi[3] mentios....[p.65]: The new governor of Agra, Khan-i-Dauran, knew that to crush Churaman by force of arms was an extremely difficult task. By temperament also he was more a man of diplomacy than of war.38 Hence, he sought recourse to conciliation and diplomacy rather than force in dealing with the Jat problem. He sent several letters to Churaman asking him to present himself before the Emperor. Churaman agreed and on 25th September, 1713 (16th Ramzan, 1125 A.H.), arrived at Barahpula. Raja Bahadur Rathora, son of Azimush-Shan's maternal uncle, was sent to receive him. On 20th October, he marched in at the head of 3000 to 4000 sawars . Khan-i-Dauran advanced in person to receive and conduct him to Diwan-i-Khas. The Jat leader presented 21 mohars and two horses to the Emperor. Farrukh Siyar granted him the title of 'Rao Bahadur Khan' along with a khilat and an elephant. His mansab was also increased. Three others (presumably including Khem Karan Sogaria) accompanying him, were also given the khilats. The charge of the royal highway from Barahpula (Delhi) to the Chambal was given to Churaman.39 It is said that at the request of the Mir Bakhshi he was also granted five parganas, Baroda Meo (Nagar), Kathumar, Akhaigrgarh (Nadbai), Au and Helak, as jagir. Khem Karan Jat was given the title of "Bahadur Khan" and assigned the jagir consisting of the parganas Rupbas, Bharatpur, Malah, Aghapur, Barah and Ikran.40

He also believes in that Khuntaile Jat chieftains (Hathi Singh of Sonkh, Fauda Singh of Arig and Sita Ram of Pathena) were given the titles of 'Faujdar', jagirs and lands on ijara. He claims further that the other kith and kins of Churaman received numerous villages and pattis on ijara.

Dr Girish Chandra Dwivedi[4] mentions Khem Karan Sogaria.... [p.77]: In September, 1720, Churaman deputed his son,108 Muhkam Singh to join Husain Ali Khan on his march towards the Deccan against Nizam-uI-Mulk. About this time (c. August, 1720), in appreciation of his valuable services, Husain Ali promised to Churaman to procure for him the title of Raja109 after his return from the Deccan. However, when the army reached near Toda Bhim Husain Ali fell (28th September) to a conspiracy hatched by his adversaries.110 His chief adherents, including Muhkam were captured. Despaired of his life the Jat offered to embrace Islam. But Muhammad Shah did not think it prudent to accept it. Instead he gave him a Khilat and allowed him to go home.111 The clamency shown to Muhkam Singh stands in deep contrast to the disgraceful treatment meted out to certain other supporters of the Sayyids.112 This gesture of the Emperor was apparently intended to win over Churaman to his side. With the same purpose promises of great favours were also made to him. The circumstances having changed, Churaman himself found it expedient for the present to submit to the Emperor.113 He led the return march of

Instead, he took the army across the territory of his foe, Jai Singh,114 later (October), Khem Karan Sogaria, a powerful Jat chieftain, joined the imperial cavalcade near Barsana. He was placed in the rearguard.115 Incidentally, it may be inferred from Muhammad Qasim's account that Khema Jat had strained relations with the Sayyids at least for over a year. This may account for their despatching Dilawar Ali Khan to reduce Fatehpur, a fort held by Khema, during Husain Ali's siege of Agra.116 It is not clear how far this incident influenced Khema's present decision.

Suraj Mal's first exploit

K. R. Qanungo[5] writes ....Suraj Mal's first exploit, during his father's lifetime, was the capture of the fort of Bharatpur in 1732,XIII by a daring night-attack upon its lord, Khem Karan Jat Sogaria. At that time, the place was only a small mud-fort without any of the formidable fortifications with which its name was afterwards associated. His untutored genius turned it into an impregnable stronghold, and around it grew up a prosperous city vying in grandeur with the imperial capitals of Delhi and Agra. The fame of his just and wise rule attracted men of all classes, professions and creeds to his principality, which was the only spot were peace and security reigned in-the midst of the chaotic plains of Hindustan.

XIII. The author mistakes Bharatpur for Fatehgarhi or Fatehpur of Khem Karan Sogaria (also known as Khema Jat) originally from Mauza Tuhiya. Suraj Mal captured Fatehgarhi in a night attack in 1733. After demolishing it he built the impregnable fort of Bharatpur at that place. On January 1743 (Magh Sudi 5, Sam. 1799) the foundation of Bharthpur was laid and the construction completed in 1750. Churaman was given the title of 'Rao Bahadur Khan' and Rai Khemkaran was given the title of 'Bahadur Khan' which is equivalent to Raja Bahadur. The Watan Jagir of Khemkaran included the pargana of Rupbas, Fatehabad (Bharatpur), Malah, Aghapur, Barah and Ikran.Soon the Jat resumed there old hostilely towards Mughal Empire. The Jat Confederacy of Braj came to control whole area to from Delhi to Chambal. Death

Maharaj surajmal sinsinwar had poisoned him. He knew that the food was poisoned but as he used to consider it as sin to get up after starting taking meals in a kansa [bronze] utensil. immidiately after taking the poisoned food he rode his elephant and moved towards Sugrivgarh. But on the way he died on his elephant. [6]

Girish Chandra Dwivedi[7] mentions....Then came the turn of yet another strong partisan of Churaman, Thakur Khema Jat of Fatehpur. In 1733, Suraj Mal attacked him and demolished his garhi at that place. But Khema was not killed in the action as is commonly believed.[8]He lived on for some time more till Suraj Mal managed his end through Bhunda Ram Jat of Arig (c. 1753).[9]

Khem Karan village in Punjab

Khem Karan is also the name of a place in Taran Taran district of Punjab. This has got historical importance because of a fierce tank battle during Indo-Pak war in 1965 AD when the entire range of American 'Patton Tanks' was destroyed by Indian artillery guns.
