Mention by Panini

Madhyamika (माध्यमिक) is mentioned by Panini in Ashtadhyayi. [1]

History

It was One of the most important townships of the Mauryan era in Rajasthan, situated on the banks of river Bairach. It was formerly known as Majhimika/Madhyamika, which flourished from the Maurya to Gupta era. The excavations over here have unearthed many interesting facts and have showed signs of strong Hindu and Buddhist influence.

The Shivis (शिवि) or Sibia Jats ruled this area. The classical writers locate Shivis (Siboi) at the confluence of Beas and Chenab. [2] Later they migrated to Rajasthan in the area of Madhyamika near Chittor from their coins bearing the legend Shibi janapadas have been found. [3] The Shivis tribe is known by several variants-Shiva in the Rigveda as one of the tribes defeated by the Bharata king Sudas; Sivi in the Aitreya Brahmana (VIII.23.10), Mahabharata (II.48.13), Sibi in Mahabharata (II. 48.13) Sibi in Mahabhashya on Panini (IV.2.52) where as Shaiba or Shaibayah as vishaya has been mentioned. Classical writers call them Siboi (Diodous 3, XVIII, 96; Strabo XV,1; Curtius IX,41)[4]

At the time of invasion of India by Alexander the great, in 326 BCE, Sivis were found inhabiting area in the vicinity of Malava tribes. The Greek writers have mentioned them wearing clothes similar to wild people even during the war. Probably the traditional Indian dress the chust angarakha and unchi dhoti gave the appearance of wild dress. After some time of Alexander's war, they probably moved to Rajasthan along with Malavas. Thus they are found moving from Punjab to Malwa and from their to Rajasthan. There are ruins of an ancient town called 'Tamva-vati nagari' 11 miles north of Chittor. Ancient coins of Shivi people are found near this town bearing 'Majhamikaya Shivajanapadas' (मझमिकाय शिवजनपदस ), which means coins of 'Shiva janapada of Madhyamika'. The 'Tamvavati nagari' (तम्वावती नगरी) was called as 'Madhyamika nagari'. These coins are of the period first to second century BCE. [5]

An Inscription found at Barli Ajmer, Barli fragmentary Inscription of 443 BC (Veera Samvat 84), reveals the name of this town as Majhimika. The grammarian Patanjali, contemporary of Pushyamitra Sunga, has mentioned in his mahabhashya the attack of Yavanas Madhyamika along with Saket (Ayodhya) ।).[6]

Varahamihira (c.6th) and Jaina poet Somadeva (c.10th) have mentioned about this ancient city. Historians believe that Madhyamika was the capital of Mauryas before Maurya King Chitranga (Chitrangada) founded Chitrakota (Chittor) in 7th century. Gauri Shankar Hira Chand Ojha has mentioned that when the Madhyamika city was abandoned the then rulers took big stones and other material from the ruins of Madhyamika for construction of Baoris, Palaces etc. One such example is Rani Shrangari Devi wife of Maharana Raimal used the stones from Madhyamika to build a Baori at Ghosundi. Nagri, a slice of history lies in neglect

Here is content from A times of India, Jaipur Report dated 8 May 2015 about Nagri -

Nagri is like any other village in Rajasthan. A settlement of around 50 houses, with a road barely wide enough to accommodate one tractor, running right in the middle of it. Elderly men in white and with colourful pagris sit around, smoking and discussing farmers' death.

The women, with their ghunghat covering their entire faces, go about their job of collecting water from the tube well. Nothing unusual about this village, apart from the fact that it is sitting on a huge slice of history.

The nondescript Nagri of today was once a flourishing town called Madhyamika, of the Mauryan era that remained a centre of power till the Gupta dynasty. That would be around the second century BC, when the Bairach River, on whose bank it was built, would have been a raging body of water. Off National Highway No. 76 as the road travels from Chittorgarh to Kota, there is little to indicate that this chunk of Indian history is lying so close by, begging for attention.

The archeological Survey Of India has fenced off a little portion, where some of the excavation work has taken place, but that does not stop cows from grazing, children from playing and the fun-loving local youth from spending a night of merriment. That has resulted in quite a bit of artifacts from that era being destroyed or taken away.

"Children have found pottery here, which they used as toys," a local informs. The only structure standing is a temple of Shiva. Around it, stone sculptures of the Mauryan era are lying in complete neglect. Smaller pieces have been taken away.

"Earlier, we could see portions of buildings jutting out of the ground," a villager says. But then, with trees being planted and the area being levelled off, not much of those can be seen now. However, the two watchmen deputed there claim that after rains when the place is being cleaned, ancient coins can still be found.

"We came across a lot of coins and earthen pottery when we were planting trees," one of the watchmen said. A villager even came forth to show his collection of coins that he had found there.

Every house in the village apparently has such coins and items that should have been in museums to showcase the rich heritage that India boasts of. Quite a few of them have been sold to foreign tourists, who are ever willing to take back with them pieces of India's history that Indians themselves care little about.

Tourists are mainly "white people", a villager informs. "Not many Indians come this way. It is the whites who show a lot of interest in the history of our village. They also seem to know a lot about Madhyamika."

There is some ambiguity in the manner of Madhyamika's destruction. Some say an invading king flattened everything in sight. Others talk of a curse on this land. While a smaller group even talk of an earthquake flipping the town over.

Perhaps this is where the great Mewar culture originated, with Chittorgarh and Udaipur coming up much later. Yet, this place lies in utter neglect, despair and completely forgotten.

Nagri, clearly deserves a lot more attention and respect.

The Jats of the south-eastern provinces divide them selves into two sections - Shivgotri or of the family of Shiva and Kashyapagotri.

In Mahabharata

Madhyamikaya (मध्यमिकाय) is mentioned in Mahabharata (II.29.7), (II.48.13) (?),

Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 29 mentions the Countries subjugated by Nakula in West. Madhyamikaya (मध्यमिकाय) is mentioned in Mahabharata verse (II.29.7). [16].... And the son of Pandu left that part of the country having subjugated the Dasarnas, the Sivis, the Trigartas, the Amvashtas, the Malavas, the five tribes of the Karnatas, and those twice born classes that were called the Madhyamikayas and Vatadhanas.
