Katewa
Katewa (कटेवा)[1] [2] Kankotak/Kankotaka (कंकोटक) [3][4] Karkotak (कर्कॊटक)[5] is a gotra of Jats found in Delhi and Rajasthan,[6] India.

Mention by Pliny
Pliny[8] mentions Arabia....The remaining places and nations on the mainland, lying still to the south, are the Ausaritæ, to whose country it is seven days' journey among the mountains, the nations of the Larendani and the Catabani, and the Gebanitæ, who occupy a great number of towns, the largest of which are Nagia, and Thomna with sixty-five temples, a number which fully bespeaks its size.
History
Some historians consider that they belong to Yadu vansh. It is believed that these were the people who lost maximum heads in war with Yavanas and hence were known as Katewas like Shishodia in Rajputs. [9]
Katewa (कटेवा) may be identified with one of The Mahabharata Tribes Karkotaka (कर्कॊटक). [10]
The River Katli that flows in Jhunjhunu was named after them. They had settled here. There was a Janpada of Katewas on its banks. There is place called Khudana on the banks of Katli where there was a fort ruled by Katewas. Presently one can see only traces in the form of a mud heap. [11]
They were initially known as Kikata inhabiting the banks of Vipasha (Beas River) and Shatrudh (Ravi River). Later, they came to settle on the banks of river Katli and here were known as Kikatwa or Katewa. They have been mentioned in Matsya Satpath Brahman 13/5/4/9. They came to be known here as Machhar.
Some historians mention their presence in Jaipur region where they were called Kachwaha. Some of these people did not believe in widow re-marriage and became Rajputs, and migrated to Narwar. Rest who did not leave their old traditions remained Jats.
