V. S. Agrawala[2] writes that Ashtadhyayi of Panini mentions janapada Kuru (कुरु) (IV.1.172) - It was known to Panini as a janapada and a Kingdom. Hastinapura (VI.2.101) was its capital. The region between triangle of Thanesar, Hisar and Hastinapur was known by three different names. Kururashtra proper between Ganga River and Yamuna with its capital Hastinapur; Kurujangala equal to Rohtak, Hansi, Hisar; and Kurukshetra to the north with its centres at Thaneswar, Kaithal, Karnal.

Karnal is the headquarters of Karnal District, with a population of 8,85,000 covers an area of 1967 sq km. Karnal is said to have been founded by the Kauravas at around the time of the Mahabharata epic for the king Karna, a key figure in the epic tale. The word 'Karnal' is actually a derived version of 'Karnalaya' (कर्णालय) i.e. the land of King Karna. Karnal is called the city of Daanvir Karna.Karan was Kunti’s first born son, son of Surya, and was thus half brother to the Pandavas. The Kaurav Prince Suyodhan (also known as Duryodhana) gifted the kingdom of the ANG Pradesh to Karan. As a proof, there is a lake here called "Karna Taal".It is believed that Karan used to bathe in this lake. Philanthropist Karna used to offer prayers after bathing at the ghats of the erstwhile sarovar. A pillar entrance of the taal states that it was the place where Karna used to donate “sawa mann” (125 kg of) pure gold everyday. It was also,at this spot that he gave away his protective armor to Indra. Some believe that it was Lord Krishna who disguised as a sadhu asked Karna for the kawach. Karna knew he was Lord Krishna but still gave his "Swans" of the district are Gharaunda, Nilokheri, Assandh, Nissang, Indri and Taraori.

Karnal sprang into prominence in 1739 when Persian emperor Nadir Shah defeated and captured the Mughal ruler Muhammad Shah in the Battle of Karnal. Raja Gopal Singh of Jind seized Karnal in 1763, and the Marhattas established themselves at Karnal in 1785. Skirmishes however, followed between the Marhattas and the Sikhs. In 1795 the Marhattas finally wrested the city from Raja Bhag Singh of Jind and made it over to the British-Irish military commander George Thomas, who took part in the fight. Meanwhile Raja Gurdit Singh of Ladwa obtained possession of Karnal. It was captured by the British in 1805 and made over to Muhamdi Khan (Mandal). The British established a cantonment in 1811 but abandoned it after 30 years due to an outbreak of malaria. The fort which had been built by Raja Gajpat Singh of Jind, was taken over by the British and converted into a residence for Dost Mohammad Khan, Amir of Kabul. The fort was used as a jail, and as quarters for native cavalry and as a poorhouse. In 1862, it was made over to the Education Department, when the District School was moved into it from the city.

There is an interesting story attached with Karnal with regard to the partition of India and the birth of Pakistan. History suggests that the person who dragged back Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah into politics was from Karnal and lived in Klandri Gate. Apart from that, the producer and director of the movie "Bend It Like Beckham" Gurinder Chadha was also born and brought up in Karnal. The district of Karnal has given a lot of big political figures to Pakistan and Nawab Liaqat Ali Khan ranks foremost amongst them. Liaqat Ali Khan was the Nawab of Kunjpura and his palace has now been converted into a Sainik School and it is situated at a distance of 10 kilometers from the city of Karnal.

Karnal is famous for Shoes, National Dairy Research Institute, Agriculture Research Institute and Basmati Rice production in the district. The area around Karnal is very fertile (famous for 'Basmati' rice).

Jats in War

G.C. Dwivedi[3] mentions ....As is to be seen the Jats later opposed, to their worth, Nadir Shah (at Karnal) and Ahmad Shah Abdali (at Manupur). These examples suffice to show their tendency of opposing the foreign invaders. K.R. Qanungo rightly remarks:

They(the Jats) have shown in all periods - whether against Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni, or against Nadir Shah and Ahmad Shah Abdali- the same propensity to fall upon the rear of a retreating army undeterred by the heaviest odds, or the terror-inspiring fame of great conquerors. When encountered they showed the same obstinate and steady courage unmindful of the carnage on the field or of the miseries that were in store for them after defeat.[4]

G.C. Dwivedi[5] mentions ....As in Karnal so in Manupur, a Jat contingent served the Mughal army against another foreign invader, Ahmad Shah. Unfortunately, the part played by the Jats in the battle of Manupur (March, 1748) has not been elucidated by Murtaza Husain, the only historian who has cared to mention this significant and hitherto unknown fact.[6]

Battle of Karnal -1739

G.C. Dwivedi[7] mentions ....Next, the Jats helped the Mughals against Nadir Shah. Living upto their reputation to oppose foreign invaders, they marched to Karnal (February, 1739) to resist the Persian invader. Both Badan Singh and Suraj Mal advanced up to south of Delhi where they stayed to watch the developments but despatched a contingent which was placed under Rao Kripa Ram, the Vakil of Jai Singh. On the battlefield, the Jats were posted to the right of the Emperor in the division of the Amir-ul-Umra.[8] But the man (Kripa Ram), who was to lead them, was a chicken-hearted fellow and he fled in the face of the relentless fire of the Persian artillery.[9] The cowardly flight of the leader must have demoralized the remaining troops, including the Jats and they apparently followed suit.

Following the crushing defeat and utter humiliation of Muhammad Shah and his surviving grandees, the Capital, now defenceless, experienced the grasping tyranny of the victors of Karnal. Indulging in sack, rape and massacre, they created panic and intense commotion in

[p.126]:the city. The passages of the Capital were blockaded and the city granaries sealed up by the order of Nadir Shah. As a result, grain became exceedingly dear and scare and famine gripped the city. Not only Delhi but also the villages around upto several miles felt the atrocious touch of the arms of the Persian invaders.35
