Panghal (पंघाल) Pangal (पंगाल)/(पंगल) Phangal (फंगाल) Fangar (फ़ंगार)Pangal (पंगल) Panghal (पंघल) Panghal (पंघाळ) Pangar (पांगर) Panghar (पांघर) gotra of Jats are found in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan. As per Bhat records these people spread at different places from village Tosham, the place of their origin, in Haryana. They were supporters of Chauhan Confederacy.

Origin

• They are said to have originated from Pingala (पिङ्गल) or Pingalaka (पिङ्गलक), who was a Nagavanshi King.

• At another place Pangal are said to be originated from Pandula (पण्डुल) son of Raja Nandram.

History

B S Dahiya writes: Pangal are mentioned in Markandeya Purana and also by Varahamihira as Pingalaka. By removing the suffix 'ka' we get the correct clan name as Pingala or Panghal. They have no connection with wings (Pankha) of any bird, as sugsested by Ibbetson. They are now found in Mahindergarh dlstrict of Haryana.

They have been mentioned in Shalya Parva, Mahabharata/Book IX Chapter 44 in shloka 96 as Pingaksha.

They are mentioned in Markandeya Purana and also in Varahamihira as Pingalaka. They are mentioned in the Satapatha Brahmana as Paingya.

Jat clans as described by Megasthenes also includes this clan. Megasthenes writes that after Taxila, Then succeeds a level tract of country known by the general name of Amanda (Manda), Whereof the tribes are four in number inhabiting the area and these are The Peucolaitae (Pangal), Arsagalitae (Asiagh), Geretae (Getae), Asoi (Asiagh)

H.A. Rose writes that the Bagri Jats have certain sections which might appear totemistic, but very rarely is any reverence paid to the totem. Such are :— Pankhal, peacock’s feather, is so called because a Dohan Jat girl had been given in marriage to one Tetha of Tosham. The couple disagreed and Tetha aided by the royal forces attacked the tribe and only those who had placed peacock’s feathers on their heads were spared.

पंघाल गोत्र का इतिहास

पंडित अमीचन्द्र शर्माने लिखा है - [p.30]: पंघाल गोत्र के बड़े का नाम थीथा था जो चौहान संघ में था। चौहान संघ मुख्यतया जाट गोत्रों का ही संघ था। वह सांभर के आस-पास किसी ग्राम में रहता था, वहाँ से चलकर तोशाम जिला हिसार (अब भिवानी जिले) में एक टूण गोत्री जाट के घर रहने लगा। थीथा और उस जाट में प्रेम हो गया। थीथा सुंदर और प्रवीण था।

[p.31]: वह जाट वहाँ का नंबरदार था। वह औरंगजेब (1618 – 1707) को ग्रामकर (माल) भरने दिल्ली जाया करता था तब वह थीथा को भी साथ लेजाया करता था। बाद में जाट ने थीथा को ही अपना मुखिया बना लिया और अपनी पुत्री का विवाह उसके साथ कर दिया। अब थीथा की दिल्ली में पहचान हो चुकी थी। जब जाट मर गया तो थीथा के साथ जाट के पुत्रों का विरोध हुआ। जाट के पुत्रों ने थीथा को मारना चाहा। थीथा की स्त्री को नाईन ने यह खबर देदी। थीथा ने दिल्ली जाकर बादशाह औरंगजेब की सहायता ली। बादशाह ने सेनापति भेजकर तूण जाटों पर हमला कर दिया जिसमें कुछ तूण जाट मर गए और कुछ भाग गए।

[p.32]: थीथा ने अपने घर की रक्षा के लिए मोर पक्षियों के पंख का चिन्ह कर दिया था इसलिए थीथा के घर को पंखालय कहा गया और उसकी सन्तानें बाद में पंखाल बोली जाने लगी जिसका रूपांतर पंघाल हो गया। पंघाल जाटों के संघ का वही गोत्र है जो चौहान संघ का पंघाल है। यह विवरण तालू ग्राम के चौधरी पखिरियाराम के पुत्र रामलाल ने लिखाया। वह पंघाल जाट है।

नोट - पंडित अमीचन्द्र शर्मा ने ऊपर टूण गोत्र का उल्लेख किया है। टूण गोत्र जाटों में नहीं होता है। यह संभवत: दूण या दुहण होना चाहिए। भाट द्वारा थीथा के 'मोर पक्षियों के पंख का चिन्ह' का प्रयोग करना यह बताता है कि वह मौर या कोई नागवंशी वंश से होना चाहिए।
