Sena Medal is awarded to members of the Indian army, of all ranks, "for such individual acts of exceptional devotion to duty or courage as have special significance for the Army." Awards may be made posthumously and a bar is authorized for subsequent awards of the Sena Medal.
It is awarded for gallantry. However, the Sena Medal (Distinguished) is given for distinguished service carried out by any soldier, not in the face of the enemy. The Sena Medal also serves as a sort of general commendation medal for the Indian Army. From 1 February 1999, the central government set a monthly stipend of Rs. 250 for recipients of the award when it is awarded for bravery. It has since been revised to Rs. 1000. It is preceded by the Vir Chakra, Shaurya Chakra & Yudh Seva Medal. It in turn precedes the Vishisht Seva Medal.

- Boyat Ram Dudi (1923-30.01.2023) was a soldier of Raj Rifles. He retired from Indian Army in 1957. He was from Bhorki village in Udaipurwati tahsil of Jhunjhunu district in Rajasthan. He fought bravely at six fronts in World War-II for which he was awarded 6 Sena Medals. He was sent to Libya and Africa during World War-II.

- Colonel V S Bhalothia
- KS Budhwar (Major) (05.02.1931 - 18.02.1970) became martyr of militancy on 18.02.1970 in Mizoram fighting with Mizo National Front militants. He was awarded with Sena Medal (posthumous) for his act of bravery. He was from Sunari Kalan village in Rohtak district of Haryana.

- Fauran Singh Kuntal (Paratrooper) (10.10.1967 - 30.03.1989) became martyr on 30.03.1989 during Operation Pawan in Srilanka. He was from Kumhan village in Bharatpur district in Rajasthan. He was awarded Sena Medal for his act of bravery.

- Mukh Ram Budania became martyr of militancy on 23.04.2002 in Jammu and Kashmir. He was awarded Sena Medal (posthumous). He was from Deenwa Ladkhani village, tehsil Fatehpur district Sikar, Rajasthan.
