Thori (थोरी)[1][2] Thory, Thouri (थौरी) Thaur (थौर) Thora (थोरा)[3][4]Tholia (थोलिया) Thoriya (थोरिया) Gotra Jats are found in Rajasthan,[5] Haryana and Madhya Pradesh.

Origin

  • Dr Mahendra Singh Arya etc consider Thori to be originated from place named Tholia (थोलिया).[6]
  • Looking to the Jat Clan System, clan names based on plants, they get name from a plant Thuar (Hindi) and Thor in Rajasthani. Its scientific name is Euphorbia nerilifolia. We have also English name - Thornton. Thornton originated from English Thornton , means "settlement walled by strong thorn hedges" or "thorny estate dweller". [7]
  • Thori is probably derived from one of Rigvedic tribes Turya. [8]

Mention by Panini

Turya (तूर्य), band of instrumentalists is mentioned by Panini in Ashtadhyayi. [9]

Turyanga (तूर्यांग) is mentioned by Panini in Ashtadhyayi. [10]

History

James Tod[11] places Thori in the list of Aboriginal Races, many names in which are not capable of identification, and their correct form is uncertain and those of the mercantile tribes are largely groups confined to Rajasthan.

Dr Pema Ram writes that after the invasion of Alexander in 326 BC, the Jats of Sindh and Punjab migrated to Rajasthan. They built tanks, wells and Bawadis near their habitations. The tribes migrated were: Shivis, Yaudheyas, Malavas, Madras etc. The Shivi tribe which came from Ravi and Beas Rivers founded towns like Sheo, Sojat, Siwana, Shergarh, Shivganj etc. This area was adjoining to Sindh and mainly inhabited by Jats. The descendants of Madras in Rajasthan are: Jinja, Bana, Thoria, Lagman, Kamodia, Madal, Devsalya, Junawa, Maderna, Judi, Madrewa, Khokh, Asihag etc. [12]

Dr Naval Viyogi has mentioned the history of Aur-Thaur, which was capital of Shor Nagas Sor Jat clan. According to him Cher, Chola and Pandyas have been important indigenous tribes of Ancient India. H.L. Kosare [13] puts forth his opinion on their origin and history. Urgapur was one of the towns of Nagas of southern region. We have enough information on this issue. Ptolemy has informed that the name of the chief city of southern Cholas was Aur-Thaur. Aur-Thaur was capital of Shor Nagas and it was under Shoartai [14]. The word Shor is synonymous of Sor or Chol of Tamil language. It is quite clear from the name of Shor nagas that Aur-Thaur was the capital of the naga kings; whosoever, he was called Shor (Chola) because he was the ruler of Shor-Tai.[15][16]

Bhim Singh Dahiya mentions about a Rigvedic tribe - Tura : (RV 1/18/2, VI/25/5, VIII/3/13, VII/41/2, V/4/5. VI/48/12 VII/40/1, l/171/1, VII/40/l etc.). Turvas is also mentioned as a king in RV X/63/10 and VI/20/12 etc. Turan are noted in RV 1/173/1, and ancient King Tura in 1/121/3. They are also mentioned in Sat.Br. IX/5/2,35. Zimmer and McDonnel, took this tribe as one of the five main Aryan tribes. They are justified also because the Avesta mentions these five tribes as Arya, Turya, Dahi, Shor,and Sarmat. Thus Thori is one of these tribes probably derived from Turya. [17]


James Tod writes that Bhatti Chief Rao Lakhar was the contemporary of Kanardeo Sonigara, whose life was saved by his (Lakhar's) wife's knowledge of omens. Lakhur was ruled by this Rani, who was of the Soda tribe. She invited her brethren from Amarkot ; but the madman, her husband, put them to death, and threw their bodies over the walls. He was allowed to rule four years, and was then replaced by his son, Punpal. This prince was of a temper so violent that the nobles dethroned him, and recalled the exiled Jaitsi from Gujarat. Punpal had a residence assigned him in a remote quarter of the state. He had a son, Lakamsi, who had a son called Rao Raningdeo, who by a stratagem pointed out by a Khurl Rajpoot, took Maroth from the Johyas, and Poogal from the Thories, whose chief, styled Rao, he made captive ; and in Poogal he settled his family. [18]
