Kaler (कालेर)[1] Kler (कलेर)[2] Kalera (कालेरा) Kalher (काल्हेर) Koleron (कोलेरोन) Kaleron (कालेरोन) [3][4] Kalair (कलेर) gotra Jats are found in Rajasthan,[5] Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Pakistan. Kaleri clan is found in Afghanistan.[6]

Origin

People who came from the side of Kalakuta (कालकूट) mountain are said to be known as Kaler. "Kal" also means "Time" in Hindi. The European equivalent of this name is "Clare"[7] According to Dr Pema Ram the Churu town in Rajasthan was founded by Kaler Jats and it was earlier known as Kalera Bas.[8]

History

49. Kalakuta (कालकूट) - A mountain (II.23.14) conquered by Arjun. Mbh. mentions the inhabitants of Kalakuta as a neighbouring tribe of Kuru land (II.20.26, V.19.30).

आनर्तान कालकूटांश च कुणिन्थांश च विजित्य सः । सुमण्डलं पापजितं कृतवान अनु सैनिकम (II.23.14)

People who came from the side of Kalakuta (कालकूट) mountain were known as Kaler - Jat Gotra.[9]

Adi Parva, Mahabharata/Mahabharata Book I Chapter 67 gives Genealogy of the Danavas, Asuras, Kauravas, Pandavas, Gandharvas, Apsaras, Rakshasas. We find Kaler in (I.61.80), (1.67). [10]

H.A. Rose [11] writes that Kaler (कालेर), (1) a Jat tribe found in Jind, where the samadh of its Sidh, Didar Singh, at Bhammawadi is revered on the 1st badi of Magh. cf. Bharanch. It is also found in Sialkot, where it claims Chauhan Rajput origin, like the Chimas, and descent from Raja, Kang through Kahr and his descendants Dara and Nattu who migrated to that District in Jahangir's time. In Ludhiana the Kaler Jats at weddings worship their jathera at his matt or shrine. They also affect Sakhi Sarwar and at marriages an offering of bread is made to a Bharai. The first milk of a cow or buffalo is given to a virgin and, if it is abundant to other girls as well. It is also found as an agricultural clan in Amritsar and in Montgomery, in which latter District it is Muhammadan : (2) an Arain clan (agricultural) found in Amritsar.

H.A. Rose [12] further writes thatKalera (कालेरा), a Muhammadan tribe, found in Montgomery (probably Kaler).
