Mahil (माहिल)/Dhanda(ढांडा)[1][2] [3]is gotra of Jats in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Pakistan.

Origin

This gotra is said to be originated from place called Mahanargarh (महनारगढ़). [4]

Mahalisai village

History

Dr Pema Ram writes that after the invasion of Alexander in 326 BC, the Jats of Sindh and Punjab migrated to Rajasthan. They built tanks, wells and Bawadis near their habitations. The tribes migrated were: Shivis, Yaudheyas, Malavas, Madras etc. The Shivi tribe which came from Ravi and Beas Rivers founded towns like Sheo, Sojat, Siwana, Shergarh, Shivganj etc. This area was adjoining to Sindh and mainly inhabited by Jats. The descendants of Yaudheyas in Rajasthan are: Kulhari, Kuhad, Mahla, Mahil, Khichar etc. [5]

The inscriptions on the Railing of the Bharhut Stupa record the names of the donors of different parts of the Railing, as of a Pillar, a BRail-bar, or a piece of Coping. Some of them also give the calling or occupation of the donors, and several add the name of their native city, or place of residence. One such inscription on PLATE LIV. Corner Pillars — S. Gate. reads:

55. Bhadanta Mahilasa thabho dānam. = "Pillar-gift of the lay brother Mahila."

Here it mentions about gift of a person named Mahila.

Sub divisions of Chauhan

Bhim Singh Dahiya[6] provides us list of Jat clans who were supporters of the Chauhan when they gained political ascendancy. The Mahil clan supported the ascendant clan Chauhan and become part of a political confederacy.[7]
