  • Roma (रोम) as a city is mentioned in Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 28 shloka 49 with reference to Sahdeva's conquest where the hero brought under his subjection and exacted tributes. [1]
  • Roma (रोम) - Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 47 shloka 26 writes: And the Sakas and and Tukharas and Kankas and Romas and men with horns bringing with them as tribute numerous large elephants and ten thousand horses, and hundreds and hundreds of millions of gold waited at the gate, being refused permission to enter. [2]
  • Romana (रॊमाण) - In 'geography' of Mahabharata (VI. 10.54); probably a variant of Vahuka (Cr. Ed. II. 47.15). [3]
  • Romaka (रोमक) - The Romaka Siddhanta ("Doctrine of the Romans") and the Paulisa Siddhanta ("Doctrine of Paul") were two works of Western origin which influenced Varahamihira (505 - 587 AD).

Origin of name

Traditional stories handed down by the ancient Romans themselves explain the earliest history of their city in terms of legend and myth. The most familiar of these myths, and perhaps the most famous of all Roman myths, is the story of Romulus and Remus, the twins who were suckled by a she-wolf.[5] They decided to build a city, but after an argument, Romulus killed his brother. According to the Roman annalists, this happened on 21 April 753 BC.[6] This legend had to be reconciled with a dual tradition, set earlier in time, that had the Trojan refugee Aeneas escape to Italy and found the line of Romans through his son Iulus, the namesake of the Julio-Claudian dynasty.[7] This was accomplished by the Roman poet Virgil in the first century BC.

Romaka (रोमक),is name of a place mentioned by Panini in Ashtadhyayi under Krishashvadi (कृशाश्वादि) (4.2.80.2) group. [9]

History

The original settlement developed into the capital of the

  • Roman Kingdom (ruled by a succession of seven kings, according to tradition), and then the
  • Roman Republic (from 510 BC, governed by the Senate), and finally the
  • Roman Empire (from 27 BC, ruled by an Emperor).

This success depended on military conquest, commercial predominance, as well as selective assimilation of neighbouring civilizations, most notably the Italics, Etruscans and Greeks. From its foundation Rome, although losing occasional battles, had been undefeated in war until 386 BC, when it was briefly occupied by the Gauls.[10] According to the legend, the Gauls offered to deliver Rome back to its people for a thousand pounds of gold, but the Romans refused, preferring to take back their city by force of arms rather than ever admitting defeat, after which the Romans recovered the city in the same year.[11]

The Republic was wealthy, powerful and stable before it became an empire. According to tradition, Rome became a republic in 509 BC. However, it took a few centuries for Rome to become the great city of popular imagination, and it only became a great empire after the rule of Augustus (Octavian).

By the 3rd century BC, Rome had become the per-eminent city of the Italian peninsula, having conquered and defeated the Sabines, the Etruscans, the Samnites and most of the Greek colonies in Sicily, Campania and Southern Italy in general. During the Punic Wars between Rome and the great Mediterranean empire of Carthage, Rome's stature increased further as it became the capital of an overseas empire for the first time.

Beginning in the 2nd century BC, Rome went through a significant population expansion as Italian farmers, driven from their ancestral farmlands by the advent of massive, slave-operated farms called latifundia, immigrated to the city in great numbers. The victory over Carthage in the First Punic War brought the first two provinces outside the Italian peninsula, Sicily and Corsica et Sardinia. Parts of Spain (Hispania) followed, and in the beginning of the 2nd century the Romans got involved in the affairs of the Greek world. By then all Hellenistic kingdoms and the Greek city-states were in decline, exhausted from endless civil wars and relying on mercenary troops. This saw the fall of Greece after the Battle of Corinth (146 BC) and the establishment of Roman control over Greece.[12]

The Roman Empire had begun more formally when Emperor Augustus (63 BC–AD 14; known as Octavian before his throne accession) founded the Principate in 27 BC.[13] This was a monarchy system which was headed by an emperor holding power for life, rather than making himself dictator like Julius Caesar had done, which had resulted in his assassination on 15 March 44 BC.[14] At home, Emperor Augustus started off a great programme of social, political and economic reform and grand-scale reconstruction of the city of Rome. The city became dotted with impressive and magnificent new buildings, palaces, fora and basilicae. Augustus became a great and enlightened patron of the arts, and his court was attended by such poets as Virgil, Horace and Propertius.[15] His rule also established the Pax Romana, a long period of relative peace which lasted approximately 200 years.[16] Following his rule were emperors such as Tiberius, Caligula, Nero, Trajan, and Hadrian. Nero was well known for his extravagance, cruelty, tyranny, and the myth that he was the emperor who "fiddled while Rome burned" during the night of 18 to 19 July 64 AD.[17] The Antonine Plague of 165–180 is believed to have killed as much as one-third of the population.[18]

Roman dominance expanded over most of western Europe and the shores of the Mediterranean, though its influence through client states and the sheer power of its presence was wider than its formal borders. Its population surpassed one million inhabitants.[19] For almost seven hundred years, Rome was the most politically important, richest, and largest city in the Western world. After the empire started to decline and was split, it lost its capital status to Milan and then to Ravenna, and was surpassed in prestige by the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, Constantinople, whose Greek inhabitants continued through the centuries to call themselves Roman.

After the Sack of Rome in 410 AD by Alaric I and the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD, Rome alternated between Byzantine and Germanic control. Rome remained nominally part of the Byzantine Empire until 751 AD, when the Lombards finally extinguished the Exarchate of Ravenna which was the last holdout of the Byzantines in northern Italy. In 756, Pepin the Short gave the Pope temporal jurisdiction over Rome and surrounding areas, thus creating the Papal States. In 846, Muslim Arabs stormed the city and managed to loot St. Peter's and St. Paul's basilica, both outside the city wall.[20]

Jat history

Bhim Singh Dahiya[21] writes that Jats are known as Geoths in Rome.

Ram Sarup Joon[22] writes that in 500 BC, Jats took part in the civil war in Italy. When the hunters invaded Italy, the Jats defeated them on the battlefield of Nester. As a reward the ruler of Italy permitted them to occupy the Danube basin called Balkans now. After four years, differences arose between the Jats and king Theodius of Italy, who attacked the Jats. The Jats were victorious and occupied Asia Minor. Then they attacked Rome and after defeating the famous military commander Allers, occupied the south Eastern portion of Italy. Theodius gave his daughter in marriage to the Jat leader. The Jats vacated Italy, advanced into and settled in Spain and Portugal.

In 490 BC, there was another battle after which Jats occupied the whole of Italy and ruled there for 65 years upto 425 BC. During this period Italy made a great measure of progress.

After the death of the great Jat leader Totila, the Jat power declined and they were driven out of Italy. Soon after, the Arabs drove the Jats out of Spain and Portugal. Consequently Jats were so weakened and scattered that they ceased to exist as a recognised group in this area,

Bhim Singh Dahiya[23] writes that We know from Strabo that Porous (Phor/Phour), a ruler over 600 kings, sent an embassy to Augustus in Rome in 21/25 B.C.[24] As for Balhara, Karpura Manjari also mentions it as Balhara. They were the rulers of Ballbhipura. According to Cunningham, Mandlii and Monedes of Megasthenes were one and the same.[25] They are the ancient Mandas.

Bhim Singh Dahiya[26] says ....Further it is known that in the later half of fifth century A.D. after the death of Attila (454 A.D.), two tribes of the Hunas attacked the Holy Roman Empire and fought for 72 years, i.e., from 485 A.D. to 557 A.D. The names of these Huna tribes are given as Kulurguri and Utarguri who, later on, were called Balgari and gave their name to the country of Bulgaria in Europe.[27] Now though it is mentioned that the descendants of the Kulars and the Utars, were called the Bals, it cannot be correct because all three are different clan names and are found among the Indian Jats even today and are called, the Kullars, the Udars and the Bals, respectively. Therefore, what must really have happened is that the war was started by the Kulars and the Utars when their clans were ruling and later on the Bal clan must have come into power and gave its name to Bulgaria. Our point however, in mentioning these facts is that all the three clans are called, 'Huns' and they definitely went to Europe in mighty wave from Central Asia under Balamir (376 A.D.), Uldes (400 A.D.), Roilas (425 A.D.), Rugula (433 A.D.), and Attila (died in 454 A.D.). These people though described as Hunas were certainly Indo-European by race because the same people even now exist among the Jats in India and as stated by Nesfield, (JKI, p. 120. ) "if appearance goes for anything, the Jats could not but be Aryans". Dr. Trumpp and Beames have shown that the Jats are purely Aryans.5b Col. Tod too states this position and suggested a kinship among the Indian Jats, the Goths of Roman Empire and the Jutes of Jutland.

Bhim Singh Dahiya writes that When the Romans threatened Alarik, the Goth, in 410 A.D. with the vast multitudes of Roman population, and its wrath against him, he gave a typical Jat reply, “Thicker the hay, easier moved”.[28]

Mangal Sen Jindal[29] writes: Before long, one of the German chieftains, Alaric, became dissatisfied with the treatment that he received. He collected an army, of which the nucleus consisted of West Goths, and set out for Italy. Rome fell into his hands in 410 and was plundered by his followers. Alaric appears to have been deeply impressed by the sight of the civilization about him. He did not destroy the city, hardly even did serious damage to it, and he gave especial orders to his soldiers not to injure the churches or their property. Alaric died before he could find a satisfactory spot for his people to settle upon - permanently. After his death the West Goths wandered into Gaul, and then into Spain, which had already been occupied by other barbarian tribes, the Vandals and Suevi. These had crossed the Rhine into Gaul for years before Alaric took Rome; for three years they devastated the country and then proceeded across the Pyrenees. When the West Goths reached Spain they quickly concluded peace with the Roman government. They then set to work to fight the Vandals, with such success that the emperor granted them a considerable district (419) in Southern Gaul, where they established a West Gothic Kingdom. Ten years after, the Vandals moved on into Africa, where they founded a kingdom and extended their con trot over the Western Mediterranean. Their place in Spain was taken by the West Goths who, under their king, Ruric (466-484), conquered a great part of the peninsula, so that their kingdom extended from the Loire to the Straits of Gibraltar"- History of Western Europe pages 26-27.

Goths and Jat clans

Hukum Singh Panwar[30] quotes James Tod[31] who asserts that "the Jats of India, the Goths of the Roman Empire and the Juts of Jutland are kith and kin.

Gathchal (गथचाल) and Ganthawara (गन्थवारा) gotra of Jats originated from Goths, who came from Rome and west Italy to India. [32]

The highly reputed historian, Arnold Joseph Toynbee has also advocated:

"It may not be fantastic to conjecture that the Tuetonic-speaking Goths and Gauts of Scandinavia may have been descended from a fragment of the same Indo-European-speaking tribe as the homonymous Getae and Thyssagetae and Massagetae of the Eurasian Steppe who are represented today by the Jats of the Panjab."[33]

James Francis Katherinus Hewitt also notes the connection between Jats and Goths:

"The Jats ... trace their descent to the land of Ghazni and Kandahar, watered by the mother-river of the Kushika race, the sacred Haetuman.t or Helmand. Their name connects them with the Getae of Thrace, and thence with the Gattons, said by Pytheas to live on the southern shores of the Baltic, the Gaettones placed by Ptolemy and Tacitus on the Vistula in the country of the Lithuanians, and the Goths of Gothland = Sweden. This Scandinavian descent is confirmed by their system of land-tenure, for the chief tenure of the Muttra district is that called Bhagadura, in which the members of the village brotherhood each hold as their family property a separate and defined area among the village lands, according to the customs of the Bratovos of the Balkan peninsula and the Hof-bauers of North-West [34] Germany .. The Getae of the Balkans are said by Herodotus to be the bravest and most just of the Thracians." [35]

H. G. Keene,[36] writes that, "There is also a thriving little principality — that of Dholpur — between Agra and Gwalior, under a descendant of the Jat Rana of Gohad, so often met with in the history of the times we are now reviewing (v. inf. p. 128.) It is interesting to note further, that some ethnologists have regarded this fine people (Jats) as of kin to the ancient Get, and to the Goths of Europe, by whom not only Jutland, but parts of the south-east of England and Spain were overrun, and to some extent peopled. It is, therefore, possible that the yeomen of Kent and Hampshire have blood relations in the natives of Bharatpur and the Panjab."

Delu Jat clan: The people in Rome who settled around Denube river were called Delu. [37]

Thedkar Jat clan: Thedkar originated from Theoderik of Estonia (थियोडेरिक), the Jat chieftain in Rome country. [38]

Malan Jat clan: Malan gotra originated after city Milan of Roman Empire. [39]

Malen Jat clan: Malen gotra is said to be originated after city Milan of Roman Empire. [40]

Utar Jat clan: B S Dahiya[41] writes: Utar are mentioned by Herodotus as Utians, along with the Sarangians (Saramgha) and the Pactyans [42]. In the Puranas they are mentioned as Uttara. Mahabharata mentions them along with the Lohans, Rishikas and Kambojas. [43] In the Sixth century A.D. they were fighting the Holy Roman Empire, along with the Bals and the Kulars. There they are named as Utargari, meaning the caravan of the Utar. The word Gari has given the Indian name Gari (wagon) According to Cambridge Ancient History, Sargon , king of Agade (2371-2316 B.C.), hears some complaints from the merchants of the city of Purushkhand, near Kayesri in Cappadocia and goes to battle against “ the land of Uta-rapashtum.” [44] Cambridge Ancient History is not sure of this name, [45] because of the wrong bifurcation. The correct bifurcation should be Utara-Pashtum, i.e. the land of the Utaras and the Pashtuns.

Ghalyan (घाल्याण) Gahlan (गहलान) Ghalan (घालान) Gallan (गाल्लान) Galan (गाल्लान) Gala (गाला) gotra of Jats found in Distt Panipat in Haryana are mentioned in the Markandeya Purana as Galava (गालव). The original name is Gall and the suffix ‘an’ or ‘va’ is added to it. The Gauls of Europe are their brothers. [46] The Gauls, the old name of the French is the same as the Gallan of India, the suffix 'an', added to clan name under Panini's rule.[47] Galava Roman Fort, which stands at Borrans Head, Waterhead, Ambleside, was was built around 79 A.D., as one of a series of fortified structures constructed to defend Roman trade routes across Cumbria. The fort stands on land owned by the National Trust and is maintained by English Heritage.

Achra Jat clan - Achra are said to have got this name from Anglo people of Roma who came to India from Europe.[48]

(Attila)

(J.J. Modi in JBRRAS, 1914, P. 548)1

(Journal of Royal Asiatic society, 1954, P. 138)।
