Bundelkhand (बुन्देलखण्ड) is a geographic region of central India, divided between the states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The region was the site of the ancient Chedi Kingdom. Historian KP Jayaswal has identified Atavi with Bundelkhand and eastern Baghelkhand. [1]

Variants of name

  • Yajurhoti यजुर्होती = Jujhauti जुझौती, बुंदेलखंड (AS, p.768)

Origin

Bundelkhand means "Bundela domain".[3] The region was earlier known as Jejabhukti or Jejakabhukti ("Jeja's province"). According to the inscriptions of the Chandela dynasty, this name derived from Jeja, the nickname of their ruler Jayashakti. However, it is possible that this name derives from an even earlier name of the region: "Jajhauti" or "Jijhoti" (khangar's capital). After the Bundelas replaced the Chandelas around 14th century, the region came to be known as Bundelkhand after them.[4]

Geography of the Region

The area of Bundelkhand is very vast and covers about 2 lakhs square kilometers. At present this region is fragmented into two states of India i.e. Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Sixteen districts are in M.P. namely Datia, Morena, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Vidisha, Raisen, Satna, Rewa, Panna, Guna, Chhatarpur, Sagar, Tikamgarh, Damoh, Narsinghpur and Bhind.

The seven districts are in U.P. namely Jhansi, Lalitpur, Banda, Mahoba, Chitrakoot, Hamirpur and Jalaun.

These twenty three districts of M.P. and U.P. broadly comprise of the Bundelkhand region. Geographically, the region is not uniform but contains varied features. This consists of high mountains, small hills, pathar, rivers, extensive forests and various kinds of soils. Major part of the region is covered with patthars (Stone rocks). It contains the mountains range of Satpura, Swarngiri and Hans.

Bundelkhand is fortunate enough it contain ten rivers namely, Yamuna, Betwa, Dhasan, Ken, Chambal, Bagi, Tons, Mahanadi, Narmada and the Mandakini.

The river Yamuna which flows through the districts of Jalaun, Hamirpur, Banda, Kalpi and then turns towards the northwest of Gawalior and Bhind, irrigates the northern part of Bundelkhand. Then the river Ken falls in the Yamuna near Chillaghat and from here it travels to Allahabad where it meets the river Ganga.

The river Betwa originates in the mountains located near Bhopal and covers almost 400 miles. This passes through Malwa and Bundelkhand and falls in the Yamuna. Bhopal, Sagar, Gwalior, Lalitpur, Jhansi, Orchha, Jalaun and Hamirpur are covered by the Betwa river and irrigates large areas in the districts.

The Chambal originates from the Janap mountains near Mau Cantt. of Indore. Then it travels through Indore, Gwalior, Moraina and Dholpur and falls in the Yamuna 25 miles south-east of Etawah.

The river Tons originates from the mountains near the estate of Mehar. The river Narmada runs from the hills of the Amarkantak and reaches Jabalpur through Mandla. Damoh and Sagar on the northern Ghat and Narsinghpur and Hoshangabad are located on the southern ghat of the rivers. Besides these, other rivers too play very important role in different parts of Bundelkhand.

Ancient History

The ancient name of Bharhut was Vardavati. Ptolemy in his 'Geography' has mentioned a city named 'Bardaotis' situated on the route from Ujjain to Pataliputra, which according to Alexander Cunningham is related with Bharhut. According to Tibetan 'Dhulva' a Shakya monk named Samyak was expelled from Kapilavastu and came to Bagud and built a stupa here. Alexander Cunningham tells us that Bagud is Bharhut. It has been mentioned to be within the Ātavī province of the ancient literature. Samudragupta has mentioned Atavi in the list of places won by him. KP Jayaswal has identified Atavi with Bundelkhand and eastern Baghelkhand. [5]

History

Bundelkhand's most well known place may be is Khajuraho, which has numerous 10th-century sculptures devoted to fine-living and eroticism. The mines of Panna have at times been famous for magnificent diamonds; and a very large one dug from the last active mine was kept for a time in the fort of Kalinjar.

The Chandela clan ruled Bundelkhand from the 10th to the 16th centuries. In the early 10th century they were feudatories of the Pratiharas of Kannauj, and ruled from the fortress-city of Kalinjar. A dynastic struggle among the Pratiharas from 912 to 914 allowed the Chandelas and other feudatories to assert their independence. The Chandelas captured the strategic fortress of Gwalior c. 950. Dhanga (c. 950–1008) left many inscriptions, and endowed a large number of Jain and Hindu temples. Dhanga's grandson Vidyadhara (1017–29) expanded the Chandela kingdom to its greatest extent, extending the Chandela dominions to the Chambal river in the northwest and south to the Narmada River.

The Afghan king Mahmud of Ghazni attacked the Chandela dominions during Vidydhara's reign, but did not retain any Chandela territory. The Chandelas built the famous temple-city of Khajuraho between the mid-10th and mid-11th centuries. During the Chandela period, Bundelkhand was home to a flourishing Jain community and numerous Jain temples were built in that period.

In the 12th century, the Rajput Chauhan rulers of Ajmer challenged the Chandelas. The Muslim conquests of the early 13th century reduced the Chandela domains, although they survived until the 16th century as minor chieftains. Bundela Rajputs grew to prominence starting in the 16th century. Orchha was founded in the 16th century by the Bundeli chief Rudra Pratap, who became the first Raja of Orchha. In 1545 Sher Shah Suri, the only Indian king to defeat Mughals and sit on Delhi throne, was killed while attempting to capture Kalinjar from the local Bundeli kings.

The region came under nominal Mughal rule from the 16th to 18th centuries, although the hilly, forested terrain of the sparsely populated region made it difficult to control. Akbar's governors at Kalpi maintained a nominal authority over the surrounding district, and the Bundela chiefs were in a state of chronic revolt, which culminated in the war of independence under Chhatrasal. On the outbreak of his rebellion in 1671 he occupied a large province to the south of the Yamuna. Setting out from this base, and assisted by the Marathas, he conquered the whole of Bundelkhand. On his death in 1732 he bequathed one-third of his dominions, including Jalaun and Jhansi, to his Maratha allies, who before long succeeded in controlling the whole of Bundelkhand, with the local rulers as tributaries to the Marathas.

Under Maratha rule the country was a prey to constant anarchy and strife. By the end of the 18th century, the Bundelas had freed themselves to some extent from Maratha power. A grandson of the Maratha Peshwa, sought to restore Maratha control of Bundelkhand from his base at Banda. Ali Bahadur warred with the Bundelas from 1790 until 1802, when he died while attempting to capture Kalinjar.

Samudragupta is reported to have conquered a Vyaghraraja of Mahākāntāra and he is identified with the Vyaghradeva of Bundelkhand.[6][7]

James Tod[8] writes that The warriors assembled under Visaladeva Chauhan against the Islam invader included the Chandels, who contended with Pirthi Raj, who deprived them of Mahoba and Kalinjar, and all modern Bundelkhand.

Kalachuri King Jajalladeva (I)'s friendship was sought by the lord of Chedi. He was also honoured with presents of wealth by the kings of Kanyakubja (कान्यकुब्ज) and Jejabhukti (जेजाभुक्ति). He defeated Sômësvara (सोमेश्वर) and imprisoned him together with his ministers and wives, but afterwards released them as desired by his mother. The kings of Kosala (कोसल), Andhra (आंध्र), Khimidi (खिमिडी), Vairagara (वैरागर), Lanjika (लान्जिका), Bhanara (भाणार), Talahari (तलहारी), Dandakapura (दण्डकपुर), Nandavalï (नन्दावली) and Kukkuta (कुक्कुट) paid annual tributes or presents to him. Bagwar clan

Bagwar (बगवार) or Baghwar (बघवार) is a Muslim Jat clan found in Pakistan.

Bagwar, a Bira Kshatriya was Baghwa - Tiger rider in Madhya Desha called Baghroha from Banpur to the dense forest of Jamdhar river long back before Samvat 1201 (1144 A.D.) as engraved footnote found below the idol of Nandi Mahadev. His descendants are Baghwar also pronounced as Bagwar. Kundeshwar is a village situated in Tikamgarh District, 5 km south of Tikamgarh, Madhya Pradesh, India. It is known for Kundadev Mahadev an ancient temple on the bank of the Jamdhar river, and is the location of Kundadev Mahadev Temple. According to ethics, Banpur was the capital of Banasur the king of demons and her daughter Usha Devi and married to Pradhuman grand son of the Lord Krishna, was a dedicated and regular devotee of this Shiv Linga of Mahadev. It is believed, that Shiv Linga has emerged from the Kunda of Bagwar Kshatriya clan landlady. [10]

Distribution in India: Bagwar's are rare but still found in the Madhya Desh i.e. erstwhile Bundelkhand and also moved out to all over India.

Inscriptions of Bundela rulers at Madanpur

Madanpur (मदनपुर) is a village in Sagar District in Madhya Pradesh. Village was founded by Chandel King Madan Varma in 12th century. Many Inscriptions of Bundela rulers have been obtained from here. [11]

Jinapala's Kharataragachchhapaṭṭavalī tells us that in V. 1239 (1182 AD) Prithviraja III started his digvijaya and on his conquest of all quarters had pitched his first camp at Narayana. He marched against Jejakabhukti, which according to Madanpur (Bundelkhand) Inscriptions, "was laid waste in V.1239 by Prithviraja III, the son of Someshvara and the grandson of Arnoraja".

Prithviraj conquered Mahoba, the capital of Chandel ruler Parmardi or Paramala, after a stiff fight with Banafara heroes Alha and Udala who were aided also by an army of Kanauj. [12]

Madanpur Inscriptions of Prithviraja III year V. 1239 (1182 AD):

There is one Inscription incised on a Jaina temple which shows that Prithviraja III conquered Chandel ruler Parmardi or Paramala.

The Rivers

The principal rivers are the Sindh, Betwa, Shahzad River, Ken, Bagahin, Tons, Pahuj, Dhasan and Chambal. The Kali Sindh, rising in Malwa, marks the western frontier of Bundelkhand. Parallel to this river, but further east, is the course of the Betwa. Still farther to the east flows the Ken, followed in succession by the Bagahin and Tons.

Laxman Burdak (talk) 22:22, 14 January 2018 (EST)
