Kot (कोत) Koth (कोथ) Khot (खोत)[1] Khoth (खोथ)[2][3] Khodh (खोध) [4]Gotra Jats live in Rajasthan, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana. They were supporters of Saroya Confederacy. [5] [6] [7]

Origin

संधू गोत्र के लोग अपना उपनाम खोथ लगाते है क्योंकि इनके पूर्वज कोथ गांव, जो कि हिसार (हरियाणा) में स्थित है, से सबंधित थे। खोथ गोत्र के लोग बाबा काला मेहर जी की संतान है। बाबा काला मेहर जी संधू गोत्र के थे। खोथ, कोथ और कोत गोत्र के लोगो के पूर्वजो के अनुसार इस गोत्र के लोग बाबा काला महर जी के वंशज है। क्योंकि बाबा कला महर जी का जन्म गांव कोथ कलां में हुआ इसलिए उनके वंशज कोथ या खोथ गोत्र लगाते है। यह कहना गलत नही होगा कि खोथ गोत्र संधू गोत्र का ही एक हिस्सा है।

बाबा काला महर जी का जन्म हरयाणा के हिसार जिले के कोथ खेड़ा गांव में चौधरी महरथ जी संधू और रामी बाई के घर मे हुआ। चौधरी महरथ सिंह जी बहुत बड़े जमीदार थे लेकिन उनके कोई संतान नही थी। उन्होंने संतान प्राप्ति के लिए भद्रा काली/भवानी माता की उपासना की जिसके चलते उन्हें एक रात माता जी के अलौकिक दर्शन हुए। माता जी के आशीर्वाद से उनके घर मे बाबा काला महर जी ने विक्रम संवत 1294 सन 1237 असुज सदी चौदस आधी रात को अपनी सांसारिक यात्रा आरम्भ करने के लिए अवतार लिया। बाबा काला महर जी को गुरु गोरख नाथ जी से भी शक्तियां प्राप्त हुई और बाबा जी ने अपने भक्तों को बहुत से चमत्कार दिखाए और सबके कष्ट निवारण किये। बाबा काला महर जी के पांच पुत्र सांगा जी, मेहा जी, पीथा जी , सूरता जी और भीवराज जी थे। इनके वंशज ही अब खोथ गोत्र लगाते है। बाबा काला महर जी के मंदिर राजस्थान और हरियाणा में काफी गांवो में है और भक्त इनकी सच्चे मन से पूजा करते है और बाबा काला महर जी के आशीर्वाद से भक्तों की सारी मनोकामना पूर्ण होती है। क्योंकि बाबा काला महर जी की गोत्र संधू थी इसलिए मूल रूप से संधू और सिंधु गोत्र के जाट सिख भी इनको अपना देवता मानते है और बाबा काला महर जी के गुरुद्वारे काफी अधिक संख्या में पंजाब में मौजूद है। बाबा काला महर जी के गुरुद्वारे पाकिस्तान के पंजाब प्रांत में भी मौजूद है क्योंकि बंटवारे से पहले संधू गोत्र के लोग ज़्यादा संख्या में पाकिस्तान के पंजाब प्रांत में निवास करते थे।

Mention by Pliny

Pliny[10] mentions Lake Mieotis and the adjoining nations....The river Lagoüs runs from the Cathæan14 mountains, and into it flows the Opharus. Upon it are the tribes of the Cauthadæ, and the Opharitæ.

14 He may possibly allude to a range of mountains in the Punjab and the vicinity of the modern Lahore, by his reference to the Cathei, who are supposed to have been the ancient inhabitants of that district. The localities of the various races here mentioned are involved in great obscurity.

In Mahavansa

  • Kot - Mahavansa/Chapter 23 tells....A householder named Rohana, who was headman in the village of Kitti near the Kota-mountain, gave to the son who was born to him the name of the king Gothabbaya. At the age of ten to twelve years the boy was so strong that in his play he threw like balls for playing stones that could not be lifted by four or five men. When he was sixteen years old his father made him a club thirty-eight inches round and sixteen cubits long. When, with this, he smote the stems of palmyra or coco-palms, he felled them. Therefore was he known as a warrior. And him, too, did the king in like manner command to stay with Gamani. But his father was a supporter of the them Mahäsumma. Once when this householder was hearing a discourse of Mahäsumma in the Kotapabbata (Kotaparvata:कोतपर्वत) -vihara he attained to the fruition of (the first stage of salvation called) sotapatti. With heart strongly moved' he told this to the king, and when he had given over (the headship of) his house to his son he received the pabbajjä from the thera. Given up to the practice of meditation he attained to the state of an arahant. Therefore his son was called Theraputtabhaya.

History

As per local tradition of Khoth Clan, they are decsendants of Dada Shri Kala Mehar ji whom they worship as their Kul Devta. As Dada Kala Mehar ji's village was Koth Khurd, their descendents started using Khoth/Koth as their surname. Dada Shri Kala Mehar is cordially worshipped by people of Khoth, Sindhu, Koth and Sandhu clans as According to spiritual books, Grand father of Dada Shri Kala Mehar Ji or Pir Baba Kala Mehar Ji was Ch Maha Singh Ji of Sindhu/Sandhu clan. All five sons of Dada Kala Mehar Ji came to Mehrana village which lies in Bhadra tehsil of Hanumangarh District of Rajasthan.

Khot people probably came from Khotan. Khotan was founded by Kustana, son of Ashoka in 250 BC.[11]

Khotan River at present is known as Hotan. During Ramayana and Mahabharata periods it was called Sailoda.

Sailoda river is mentioned in Ramayana (IV.43.37) and Mahabharata (II.48.2) flowing in Uttarakuru region between the mountains of Meru and Mandara. There used to grow the Kichaka bamboo. It was inhabited by ancient people like Khashas, Ekasanas, Arhas, Pradaras, Dirghavenus, Paradas, Kulindas, Tanganas, and Paratanganas etc.

Sailoda is identified by V.S. Agarwal with the present Khotan River on the banks of which are mines of yashab or ashmasar which was probably known as suvarna. kichaka is a chinese word. [12]

The Allahabad Pillar Inscription of Samudragupta (335 - 380 AD) mentions Samudragupta's capturing a king born in the family of the Kotas (कोत) [13]

Udayagiri Cave Inscription of Chandragupta II (=A.D. 375-414) mentions Virasena, the child of Kotsa, the minister for peace and war under Chandragupta II, who knew the meanings of the words, and logic, and (the ways of) mankind, who was a poet and who belonged to (the city of) Pataliputra.[14]

The coins of the Kotas bearing their name have been found in East Punjab, and Delhi, and 'they probably ruled in the Upper Gangetic valley'.[15] Scholars differ in their views about placing the Kotas; some identify it with Kanyakubja while others with Pataliputra.[16]

It is known that Puspapura or Kusumapura was the name of both the Pataliputra and Kanyakubja.[17] It must, however, be noted that the city of Puspa here is connected mainly with Samudragupta and not with the Kota-kulaja,[18] so the location of the city of the Kotas is not to be traced in Kusumapura or Puspapura. It is well known that Chandragupta I received Magadha through his Licchavi-alliance and it is possible that Samudragupta enjoyed his youth playfully at Pataliputra (Puspa-āhvaye kridata). So Goyal's assumption that 'Harisena has referred to Kanyakubja and not Pataliputra'[19] is incorrect. It is only later that Kanyakubja gains the honour of being called Kusumapura when the glory of Pataliputra had started declining.[20]

In view of the context of the victory over Kota-kulaja along with the Naga kings Achyuta and Nagasena and with the support of numismatic evidence it may be said that the kotas lived somewhere between East Punjab and Delhi.

सेहला गाँव से सहनाली जाने वाले रास्ते में गायों को छुड़ाने में खोत जाट शहीद हो गए थे जिनके यहाँ चबूतरे बने हुए हैं। खोत जाट उनको अपना कुल देवता मानते हैं। विवाह के पश्चात् गठजोड़े की धोक-पूजा यहाँ की जाती है। आगे शोध की आवश्यकता है।[21]
